My daughter wants to visit W&M during the month of September. Would any of you who visit be kind enough to look over her classes and ECs and tell me what you think her chances are as an out-of-state student? Thanks so much!

hey, i applied to wm last year with similar stats. but do you know her sat scores? my gpa and class rank were about the same, my sat's were 1470 and i had four years of a couple sports and clubs that were important to me. i got accepted early decision but i know a lot of people with even better stats and better extra curriculars who got rejected or waitlisted during regular ad. so i'd say she has a decent shot if she applies early, but it might be a reach if she applies regular. of course that depends on her sat scores. i think it also depends on what state your from- it's def easier to get admitted from the midwest that the northeast. i hope you enjoy your visit to the 'burg! its gorgeous!

Thanks, wildflower. Her SAT scores were 2080 (CR710, M680, W690). Thank you for the suggestion to apply early. We look forward to visiting. I've heard it is just beautiful. Are you currently a student at W&M?

Good/very good. I hope she still has time to sleep with that EC list.

yeah i'll be headed down for freshman orientation in a few days, im SO excited! i keep learning new things about the school each day that make me proud to be a tribe member, i really hope you and your daughter like it when you visit!

i'd say a pretty good chance at getting in. I see nothing in the GPA/SAT/ECs that would be a cause for much concern (as long as "county teen court" doesn't mean she got in trouble and had to go to court =P), especially if she can emphasize something out of those ECs to show the depth (swimming pops out as a choice, swimming for school and volunteer, or the tutor + mentor stuff).

volunteering at the hockey draft sounds very interesting (i'm a hockey fan). I'm assuming that means you're from Tennessee. I just checked and there were only 28 people on facebook who list their home state as TN (as opposed to over 200 from NJ), so I don't think your state is over represented. If you come the 24th you can watch the football team beat up on Liberty for Family Weekend =P

Thanks for all the replies!

Slammer, sleep is a precious thing for D right now. I don't know how she does it all, but she does ... and she likes it. I secretly hoped she wouldn't work during her senior year, but when she returned from Governor's School this summer, her boss asked if she would please come back (apparently it takes some true talent to dip the ice cream the way she does ;) ).

Wildflower, please keep us posted on your new adventures at W&M. I know you must be so excited ... I look forward to your future posts.

Soccerguy, fortunately she serves as the prosecutor, defense attorney or juror on teen court instead of the defendant (big sigh of relief there!). It's a great program ... teens who are arrested for a variety of offenses (shoplifting, underage drinking, vandalism, etc.) are given the option to go before a judge or go before a jury of their own peers with another teen serving as the prosecutor and one as the defense attorney. They go through training to learn about the legal system and it's been quite successful here in our county. Yes, we're from Tennessee. I'm so glad that hockey has returned! Football is my first love, but I do love hockey, too. I'd like to do the W&M v. Liberty game on the 24th if we could work it out, but we're also trying to schedule the Wash U thing so that we can catch the Titans@Rams game while in St. Louis. We've seen several schools already, but W&M and Wash U are the final two on our list, and we're trying to work out the travel logistics of getting both visits done within the period of September 23rd - September 28th.

Thanks again for all the info! We're looking forward to our visit.

That teen court thing sounds like a really good idea. They should expand that program to... everywhere.

Well, good luck to her. I'm sure whatever school she ends up at will be happy to have her. I hope she's one of the people that 'clicks' with W&M when she visits.

soccerguy, I know at TJ they had a mock trial program where kids could play defense attorney or prosecutor in front of a real judge in fake cases, but the 'teen court' thing does seem to actually have a civic use..

It must be great to have a mother who is so supportive!

I am very envious...

I would say your daughter has a solid shot at getting accepted.

Good luck!
