yet another chances thread...

Nationality: Canadian
Ethnicity: Asian
School: Public

Type: Early Action

SAT I: ~2200 (haven’t taken it yet, but I see no reason why I can’t get this mark)

SAT II:

History: hasn't taken it yet (will in Nov), but see no reason why I wouldn't get 800.
Math IIC: 740 (I may take it in nov to get a higher score)

AP:

(completed)

US Hist: 5
Microeconomics: 4
Macroeconomics: 4
AP Calculus AB: 4

I should note that I only got those 4's because my school didn't offer those courses and I had to study them on my own.

APs this year (senior year)

Physics B
Psychology
Chem (haven’t decided on this one yet)

GPA:

Junior year unweighted GPA - 3.8 (I'll explain this later)
Class Rank - school doesn't rank

University Courses:

I will be taking year two university level courses (year 2, in political science or econ) at a university. It's supposedly one of the best universities in Canada. I hope that makes up for my bad school marks.

Extracurricular:

President of the History Club
Founder of the Debate Club
Founder of the Economics Club

The debate club hosted a debate among local politicians (3 of the 4 major parties' candidates came) during a recent by-election. Yes, I was personally involved in this.

Chess Club (Gr. 8-10)
Physics Club (Gr. 11): We went to a physics competition and won 2nd place among almost 70 schools.

I was briefly involved in rebuilding the school's website. I had to quit due to time constraints. I am now on the team to expand the student forum.

Raised money and designed the website for a canned food drive effort (for the homeless) in my school.

Trinity and Royal Conservatory of Music certificates in public speaking and debate

~400hr of volunteer work for various organizations and teachers

References: still searching for teachers.... it will be okay, though definitely not great.

Essay:
I wrote one on #2 – the one about zooming in and out of something - , but I am working on a second one for #4 (smash 2 ideas or items together and see what emerges)

Notes:

Regard the GPA, it's calculated quite differently from how American schools do it. Firstly, there is no weighted score. Honors and AP count as much as art class. Secondly, 86% gets you 4 while 73% gets you a 3. There are no A+’s or B-‘s. Instead, it goes from A (86%), B (73%), C+, C and C-.

What are my chances Chicago EA?

You listed your GPA only for junior year. What were your other grades?

The GPA difference confuses me.

Class rank would probably help more, if you could provide it.

You're a good candidate for National AP Scholar for Canada, if it matters.

You've probably read this before, but it's the most helpful advice I can give you.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-chicago/403810-before-you-post-your-chances-thread.html

Probably the most important thing you can do for yourself is identify viable safeties that you would enjoy attending provided you don't get into Chicago or other top schools. As a Canuck, you have a variety of great public schools to choose from if you want, so I'd say you're quite lucky in that regard.

I can repeat for you what you already know: your scores and grades are in range for consideration.

I can't tell you what you want to hear.

Junior year is important - but they do look at your GPA from your sophomore and freshman years as well. If these years put your GPA into say, the straight B range, you should certainly still apply, but just be aware that you need to cast a wider net with your other applications.

Also be aware that rank by decile is often available to colleges - even if the school does not officially rank. If you can get any sense of where you stand, it will help you evaluate your options.

gr. 10 gpa - probably around 3.6-3.7. I'll have to find my old report card to get an exact score. EDIT: 3.625

decile rank - probably 90th decile

Ok, that's good, top 10% or so is decent. The truth is, that we can't actually do much more that look for obvious problems, and then say in range, or that Chicago would be a reach. You look in range. The only other issue is financial aid - if you are not a citizen or permanent resident, it is much harder if you are asking for aid.

Unfortunately for those applying this year, Chicago went up another notch in USNWR and is doing the common app for the first time. Both of these probably mean more applications will be submitted - making predictions harder.

86- an A? INFLATION~!
By the way my school doesn't add on points to your grade either.
Anyways I would say you have a good shot, the website building might look good, I don't know, i too created websites for comm service and it was pretty easy and fun. Your ec's are ok, comm service hours are good and depending on your essays I would say....
Overall, 60%- if that number means anything lol =)

It's not really grade inflation when it's a province-wide things. Anyways, thanks for your suggestion. The website building thing isn't actually the strongest part of my EC. I spend much more time on my clubs than I do on the websites. And yes. I created them for volunteer hours.
