No, I don't think you'd ever really need one. There are computers on campus that you can use.

Computers are really easy to find and the ones in the library are REALLY nice (SFL). That being said I'd be a lot more bored without my own computer. I'm assuming you won't be bringing a desktop (if you are, then you DEFINITELY don't need a laptop).

You don't need a laptop, but having your own computer at your desk is very nice- I'm pretty sure everyone in Ruddock has one. I have both a desktop and a laptop, and only use the laptop when I go home- but my desktop definitely gets a ton of use.

I see...actually, the purpose of my first post was to collect enough evidence from Caltech students to persuade my dad into letting me have a laptop, but I guess the wording was a bit off. :)

What are some advantages of having one?

A laptop or any computer at all?

A laptop...

The advantage is you can sit in your room and play WoW all day. There really is no advantage except convenience.

Why not check Caltech wireless for discounts?

Hriundeli, another advantage to having a laptop is that you can take notes on it in class, provided it's a tablet pc or you speak and type TeX fluently :)

I personally have a desktop only. It satisfies my needs 95% of the time.

Surfing the internet when lecture gets boring so you don't fall asleep and make the prof mad? :P

There aren't any hum/soc.sci. classes that I know of where you can surf the web freely. Remember Hum10, Tom?The prof said he prohibited students from using laptops in class because they weren't paying attention.

If it's a big class, just go to your room and sleep.

Right E--I just meant as an advantage for laptops in general, not necessarily for laptops in a hum class. And of course I was being slightly facetious.

Haha, he prohibited laptops? I guess that was our classes fault because I remember bringing mine once or twice.
