Hi all,
My son was deferred by Ga Tech (one of his top three choices). He is in IB, has an unweighted GPA of 3.43, SAT of 2000, ACT of 31 and tons of extracurriculars (4 year varsity swimmer with captain senior year, Eagle Scout, NHS, Marine Science club, Club swimming with honors, etc). He didn't get into MIT (thank goodness-didn't want that tuition bill!) and hasn't heard from University of Florida (2/8) but does have other options so far but they are lower on his wish list. He's an out of state student for Tech and I'm wondering what his chances are of getting in.

Thanks!

Have you figured out his gpa the way tech does. only certain classes(no band. pe health art etc…) but then they add in extra for AP and I think IB?

That’s pretty odd
I never understood why better applicants than me didn’t get in

FraNeighbor - I’m not sure what your stats are but remember it’s not just your gpa or test scores, it’s what classes you took,senior schedule, and your essays. The admins are looking for certain things and you had what they were looking for. We can all guess as to someones chances but without the whole app …all I know is my son got in along with some of his friends meanwhile some other kids at his school who people thought were shoe-ins got deferred…Only the admins know why.

MichiganGeorgia-he did recalculate his GPA but doesn’t remember what it was! It wasn’t off the charts or anything but the IB curriculum is pretty streamlined with no fluff and little room for electives so most of his classes will be included. The extra IB weighting is the same as AP though.

OP- The reason I was asking was if you had the recalculated gpa you could get a better idea of what his chances are. The scores and GPA averages in EA were really high but they are bound to be lower in RD more like last years class averages.

last years admitted class tech version of the gpa was a■Mid-50% GPA: 3.77 - 4.08

So if his recalculated gpa is in that range he has a really good chance of getting in.

Thanks. His is in that range.

The reason I’m saying that is because I’m also IB. True, I may not know the whole app, but these numbers beat mine.

Fran- Well then you had a great essay!:)

@Michigan Thanks! I suppose so.

@OP I’m sorry that your son was deferred. I’m sure the Acceptance will come in for RD.
