say cost isn't a facotr. which dorms are considered the best in terms of facilities and location? does any of the dorms have personal bath rooms for each room or 2? (including the granville towers...) what do you guys / girls say?

As far as on campus housing, the four newest dorms, Morrison South, Craige North, Eringhaus South, Hinton James North all have a bath between two rooms, in other words, only four people share the bath. In these dorms the students are responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms. In most other suite configurations eight people share the bath and the bath is cleaned by the university. No rooms that I am aware of have a private bath except for RA's rooms.

I can't help you with Granville Towers, sorry.

thanks edad, how about those communities (morrison, craige etc...) when looking at the older buildings? I am just filling out my housing form and i need to rank my perference between Morrison, Craige, Ehringhaus, Hinton James, Middle/North campus... which one is the best in terms of the rooms and facilities? what's Middle / North campus?

thanks again...

Are you an incoming freshman or transfer student?

The campus is essentially divided into three parts; North campus is the original campus, houses all the academic buildings and offices. Middle campus is just that and is a bridge between North and South Campus; the football stadium, athletic fields and baseball stadium (among other things) and some dorms are in middle campus. South campus is mostly dorms and is where most freshmen and many sophomores live. The newly opened (March '05) Ramshead facility (dining and recreation) is a big attraction which though technically on middle campus really is a bridge between campuses, is relatively close to south campus dorms and has caused many people who might have requested other housing to remain on south campus next year. The Dean Dome, home of the basketball team is also on south campus along with the medical school and hospitals.

If you haven't already done so, look at one of the maps online to get a feel for the overall layout of things.

http://www.unc.edu/visitors/mapshome.html

Morrison (not Morrison South) will be closed for the next two years for remodeling. It housed close to 1000 students and as a result, more freshman will live in Middle and North campus locations next year than in the past.

Hinton James is the farthest south dorm and thus has the longest walk to things but note that the transit system is excellent and free.

Hope this helps.

thanks a lot edad!
Well, I'm not a freshman and not a transfer student, I'm an international student from Israel, probably going for a semester or 2 through the NC Exchange program. so how should I rank the different communities, I'm suppose to rank Morrison, Craige, Ehringhaus, Hinton James, Middle/North campus. I don't have a clue of how to decide about it and it seems like something important... I want to be in a place with the best conditions and facilities but not somewhere isolated... what do you say?
I did notice that all communities have one old building (built in the 60's) and one new building (built in 2002), obviously I would perfer the new one, but they don't ask for my specific perference with in each community.

Here's how I would rank it and why:

1) Middle/North campus, great dorms, very close to class and library and Middle campus is in a great location.

2) Ehringhaus, next to the baseball stadium, most north south campus dorm now that morrison is closed and its very close to Ramshead and Bull's Head Market

3) Morrison, now this one is a tough one because with Morrison closed then that only leaves Morrison south, which isn't as big and so spots are limited, but its in a great location and its a nice dorm. but be warned construction is next door with the renovations with morrison so expect noise and closed paths.

3)Hinton James, well its next to the dean dome and it has a free printing lab on the first floor (only one is south campus). Its pretty far south so thats the only downside.

4) Craige, well craige is just plan ****ty, I'd say its the worst dorm in south campus. Its crappy and small and far down south. Fire alarm rings a lot, its either faulty or drunk underclassmen are pulling it.

thanks, that's was very(!) useful, anyone else care to post their rankings to those 4 communities?

sorry i'm popping it up again. is there big difference between the new buildings (built 2002) and the old buildings (built in the 60's) is big? or were the old buildings renewd over the years? oh, and if someone care to rank the mentioned commuinities (just like unccadet08 did) i'd appreciate it.

thanks in advance...

Dan

when it comes to south campus then yes, there is a big difference but they are renovating all the dorms. The problem is they can't do it all at once so its taking a very long time. The main changes really are improving the elevators, remodeling rooms so that they all have modular furniture, and making central air conditioning in the dorms.

I lived in Morrison my freshmen year and it was pretty worn down, the elevators were always breaking down, the closet doors were always breaking, most rooms didn't have a/c, and the kichens on each floor were just plan ****.

And like I said, most the dorms up in north campus have been remodled so even though they are some of the oldest they are also some of the nicest and most popular. For example, Old East is one of the most popular dorms and a very hard one to get into and it was the first dorm ever built at Carolina (1795).

about middle/north. If I want to have the full college experience, wouldn't it be too isolated? I noticed that all the other dorms are more to the south...

thanks,
Dan

nah, you're not really isolated if ur in north campus, and you are in no way isolated if your in middle campus (since middle campus is just in pretty decent location.

south campus can get loud and I mean almost every day around 3am when your probably trying to sleep. it gets old. so don't think if you're not living in south campus that you are missing anything because a lot of rising sophmores tried really hard to get out of south campus but are stuck there for another year, thanks to the closing of morrison.
