So I'm going to the U of Minnesota this fall as a freshman. I want to live in the superblock but I'm a little nervous about living in the all-freshmen dorms. I've put Centennial hall as my first choice and have thought of living in a single dorm. I'm wondering if this is an okay dorm for freshmen. I've heard it's more upperclassmen. I'm not a big partier (thats why i avoided the all-freshmen dorms) but I still want to meet people. Feel free to compare the other superblock dorms too. :)

yoopergirl…I think you’ll be able to meet people and make friends in any of the dorms. If you opt for a single room, you may find yourself in an area with more upperclassmen than freshmen, so that could make it a little harder for you. I think the general consensus is that you’ll be able to find quiet areas/halls in any of the dorms but you’ll also be able to find parties in any of the dorms as well. I wouldn’t rule out the all freshman dorms too quickly, as that is often a great way to integrate to the university since you’ll have something in common with everyone right off the bat.

If you don’t mind the 10 minute walk across the river, Middlebrook might be a nice compromise for you. The Honors housing is there, and a lot of students who are looking for a good balance of serious students but enough party atmosphere when you want it opt for Middlebrook. They also have a lot of double rooms with a semi-private bathroom (4 people share) if that appeals to you. Our D1 will be living in the Honors housing, and thinks all of the features/benefits of Middlebrook match up well with her.

BTW…what part of “Da UP, eh” are you from? Our family is originally from the Ishpeming/Negaunee area. Good Luck at the U. Go Gophers!!

I’m from pretty close that area actually.
But yeah, superblock was my first preference because I’ll be in the marching band and it would be great to be close to the stadium for rehearsals.

it’s not a bad thing to be in a dorm with all freshman. actually you will find more in common with them than being in a mixed area since you will all be going through the same experience together, and it will be easier to find people to tag along with for all the first-year activities and such.

Hi Yoopergirl251 -

I was a Community Advisor (UMN’s version of an RA) in Centennial, and my house was mostly freshman in single rooms, and they had a great year, from what I could tell! They ended up really close, and most of the first-years had friends in most of the other buildings too.

That being said, there were also quite a few people from the marching band in Centennial too!

At the end of the day, no matter which residence hall you get placed in, I’m sure you’ll find a group of people to hang out with and you’ll make the best of any situation that you are placed!

Good luck!

^yeah, centennial is awesome, well located and stuff. but the food, OH MY FRIGGING GOD, the food sucks so bad you die.
I live Middlebrook, (moving out in 4 days ) and I love it here. it ain’t as far as it seems, and is awesome. I strongly recommend this hall. the people are awesome, the food is worth eating and the west bank is artsy and awesome. I’m a CSE student and have to travel to the east bank daily and it ain’t as bad as it seems.

Thanks UMN Grad! That makes me feel a lot better. I think I’m going to keep that roomy type and building as my first choice and put down a double in Frontier as my back up…that way if I get put in with a roommate, I guess it was just meant to be. But I think a single is gonna be my first pick.
And thanks for the input about Middlebrook, ansrox. I may consider it in future years, but I think it’s in my best interests to go with something in the Superblock since it will be close to my main activities.

Keep us abreast of what you choose, why and how it works out. I’m applying for class of 2016.

Good, Florida kid needs a bit of Golden Gopher!
