Yet another Ivy Hopeful

I applied EA to Yale. Realistically, I hope to get wait-listed and then try to find a way in. I'm more hopeful about Brown for RA.

Here's the Application:

UW GPA (of 12): 10 --> 92.0 (All AP classes)
SAT Composite (of 2400): 2210
SAT Composite (of 1600): 1490

Subject Tests:
- Chem: 740
-US History: 740

AP Scores:
-English Lit: 5
-AB Calc: 5
-Chem: 5
-US History: 5
-Spanish Lit: 4
-Spanish Language: 3

Extra Curricular Leadership Roles:
-Habitat for Humanity
- President (2 years)
-Spanish Club
- President
-Orchestra
- 1st chair trumpet (2 years)
- Four Years Work Experience
- Student Gov't
- class rep
- proctor (boarding school equivalent of RA)

If it is of any consequence, my sister graduated Cum Laude from Yale.

Sorry the EC’s didn’t format correctly. To clarify:
-H4H (2 year president)
-Spanish Club (president)
-Orchestra (2 year first chair trumpet)
-Student Gov’t (Class rep & proctor)

And please dont be shy to crush my dreams… always a fan of constructive criticism

please bump

Hmm I don’t know I think you have a chance, but it will be difficult. I don’t see anything that makes you special or unique, but you do have all the stats to be considered. If you wrote some great essays then you have a better chance. Your ECs are extremely vague so its hard to gauge the commitment and passion you had. Listing you were president means almost nothing to these kinds of schools if you didn’t do anything. Your 4 years of work experience could be valuable if you worked in something interesting.

Thanks for your response! I did plenty of stuff as president of the clubs, but I’m not going to make you guys read them all. Anyone else?

I think you have a real chance. Since your sister already got in, I assume you compared her essays, ECs, stats with yours so you have that information.

Yeah. My SAT and GPA are a little lower. I’ve heard that even top universities give small bumps on the SAT for guys. Our essays are different. I guess there’s no real way to tell whose is better.

I looked for the surveyed Harvard 2018 SAT numbers here: <a href=“The Harvard Crimson | Class of 2018 By the Numbers”>http://features.thecrimson.com/2014/freshman-survey/admissions/</a> and it shows virtually identical SAT numbers for male and female students. I suspect Yale scores are similar, and I doubt they look at test scores differently when evaluating males and females. Obviously you are a qualified candidate (although not exceptional for Yale), thus the decision is liable to come down to essays, recommendations, the general impression left by your application, and possibly your interview (the last is debatable).

I hope you asked your sister to proofread your essays before you submitted your application!

Interesting article on the Harvard class of 2018. How big an issue do you guys think it is if an applicant is 40 points below average? It’s interesting that they used the 2400 SAT score as the benchmark, not just the 1600 score of Math and Critical Reading

Hey man… I think Yale and Brown are quite realistic for you providing you have good essays. Out of curiosity what are your safeties?

UMass is the only real safety I have on my list. I am also putting in an application to Northeastern, but I can’t consider that a safety. I figured I’ll wait and see how Yale ends up before searching for a safety that is a good fit

If I were you I’d consider adding BU, NYU, Wake Forest, or UMich… Just in case you don’t get into ivies you should have some great options. Your stats are awesome and UMass is a pretty big step down for someone of your caliber. Best of luck! :)

I wouldn’t be surprised if you got in, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if you got rejected. You have pseudo-legacy along with the fact that you’re applying early which definitely will help. Your SAT score is good enough , but not great. Your ECs seem good, but nothing stands out as a hook. Idk too much about GPA on a 100 scale, but it seems fine. Overall, I’d say Yale is a reach for you, but you still have a fighting chance!
Thanks for doing mine btw!

are you a urm?

urm?

under-represented minority i believe

nope. Unless white people are underrepresented

Anyone else out there with any thoughts?

under represented minority
