Yet another "rate me schedule" thread :)

Hey guys and gals,

I'll get straight to the point. How does this schedule look?

ECON1 with Antonovics
MCWP40
CHEM6AH
MATH31AH

I have 44 credits from APs and don't want to waste credits. That's not at all why I'm taking the two honors classes though. I plan on a possible double major in both math and chemistry, so I want to take them both and weigh my preferences. I also know if the load gets too hard I can just drop one.

I'm in Muir, as you all can tell from the MCWP :P. Do you think it's too early to be taking the writing, or would it be more wise to take another general education? With econ, science, and writing out of the way, all I have is the diversity requirement, for which I plan on taking one of the hild7 classes this year (I'll add it into the empty slot MCWP would leave me with since it only 3 classes one quarter) and 2 other GEs for Muir, for which I plan on taking philosophy and mandarin at some point.

Does that pretty much free me of my GEs through next year? And is there anything some of you would recommend for me trying to double major? I know I'm going to have to take a couple 5 class quarters down the road, which I'm fine with. Also, when should I work in the lab for the chem series?

Thanks for all the help!

hey,
just because you major in math doesn’t mean you have to take 31AH but seeing as you seem to really enjoy math, go ahead and try it. do be aware that “honors” in college is very different from what you experienced in HS. it’s not just at a faster pace and at a greater depth and breadth of the material, but you will also experience un-high school-like rigor / expectations from professors and emphasis on proofs, geometry, and ways of thinking that you almost definitely will not be familiar with. so just be prepared.

anecdote: my friend loved math (Calc BC score 5, easily) and always excelled in her classes, but on the first day of 31AH she was totally lost. the material was in no way continuous from Calc BC, apparently.

so go ahead and try it, keeping in mind that 31AH is not the end-all be-all and you can always drop it and enroll in the 20 series instead. I feel the same about honors CHEM 6

While I recommend keeping ECON 1 (fun, easy, useful-ish), it is also a class that is offered plentifully every quarter so you can always take it another time. Still a good class to try though, and it shouldn’t be too time-consuming or difficult.

I would overall consider your schedule kind of on the heavy side. you’re not in a rush to complete Muir writing, which is pretty notorious for its harsh grading & writing intensivity, so maybe you can put that aside while you focus on the two classes that most pertain to your future goals so you can see where you are, where you envision yourself / what you need to do, and more importantly, have time to savor and nurture those major-related classes instead of worrying about papers and such.

So this is what i would do:

enroll in what you have listed

be prepared to drop a class / switch out of one or more of the honors series courses

make sure you drop before week 4, add before week 2.

Thank you for the detailed response! I’ve heard most of the same stuff about honors from everyone else, but I still want to give them both a try. Knowing that I can add a class before 2 weeks actually helps a lot as well, I didn’t know you could do that. Regardless, I absolutely love math and I really hope that I’ll enjoy the class. I hear from many that 20C is easier than calc BC, and I don’t know if I could handle that. BC already verged on the edge of boring for me haha.

I’m also a regents scholar, if that matters at all whatsoever. Teachers have always told me that I’m a fantastic writer, which is why I didn’t think the writing would be too bad. If it is indeed a very difficult class though, would you recommend I take philosophy this quarter? Then I’ll just add on the HILD7 for my diversity requirement whenever I need to and I’ll take the regular non-honors classes for my major(s) next year. Philosophy and econ should be relatively easy and I can focus on the honors courses? Would philosophy be a lot easier than writing?

Thanks for the help!
