So after a lot of stress and discussion with my CalSo counselor, I've finally gotten my classes down in a schedule that appears to work:

http://i30.tinypic.com/30d9shs.jpg

which is
4 - E 10
4 - Math 53
3 - E 7
4 - English 110 (Medieval Literature)
1 - BioE 24

my main concerns are:
1. How far is Barrows from Evans? (English -> Math back to back twice a week)
2. How manageable is this overall? I very much would like to have a 3.8+ GPA (wouldn't everyone, right? haha), and I have taken a CC equivalent to Math 53 (though that was last year), but I also really want to be very active in EC's and sports and whatnot
3. How important are grade distributions? Pick a Prof shows English 110 as having only 22% A's (I could take Chinese 7A instead, and am equally interested in it which has 40% A's, but also an extra discussion), and also deciding between two E10 teachers only has almost 10% more A's)

hey, I'm a frosh too, so I can't help that much...

but you know about Berkeley time, right? I sure you do from CalSO, but if not, classes start 10 minutes after the scheduled time.

If you walk quickly, 10 minutes should get you to the other end of campus!

I'm taking 53 too :) who is your prof?

English 110 would be an unusual course for a freshman to take.

hutchings for 53, assuming I get into the discussion I signed up for

and yeah, I think I'm going to just suck it up and take the extra discussion with Chinese 7a. I think I'd be more interested in that anyways. Only leaves 30 minutes for lunch on tuesday though :(

but any further thoughts on difficulty, and grade distribution (picking a prof for Eng 10... 46% A's with Devine vs 39% A's with Z. Shen)

Jennifer Miller is teaching English 110 this semester, isn't she?

I wouldn't recommend an upper division English class to any incoming freshman who isn't extremely comfortable with their analytical essay skills. You will be writing papers, you will be reading a lot, and you will be expected to do both of these well and with great academic curiosity.

Jennifer Miller will expect more out of you than most professors will. You will probably have 2-3 papers, probably a 5-7 pager and a 10-15 pager (possibly related). Additionally, you will have a midterm (~2 essay questions) and a 3-hour final that really does take 3 hours (and it's likely only 1 question). You WILL need to do all or most of the reading, and you will need to be prepared to participate in eclectic discussions. Professor Miller has a group of students affectionately referred to as her sycophants which can be irritating to deal with during class and make getting to talk to her during office hours difficult. However, Professor Miller is usually pretty flexible and very understanding and tries to make time for all the students who want to talk (in class and out), so all this really means is that you need to have some backbone and not be afraid to speak up and to go see her.

Personally, I recommend a class with Professor Miller to anyone who feels they can handle it. She's got a unique style of teaching, and taking one of her classes early on could open up a few intellectual doors for you early enough that you can take full advantage of them.

Barrows is down by Sproul Plaza, Evans is up closer to Foothill. It's a decent walk, and more or less uphill, but you should be able to make it as long as you don't dawdle. Good luck getting out of Professor Miller's class on time, though, she has a tendency to run 5+ minutes over. >_>

Isn't Jennifer Miller the bearded lady?

ahh yeah, so I've decided to take Chinese 7a instead of Eng 110 (Wheeler -> Evans now... any better?). Miller's class seemed interesting, but I'm not sure if I'd be quite up to scratch for it 1st semester. Darn, though, only 30 minutes for lunch on tuesdays because of the chinese 7a discussion :(

Bartleby: Yes, but that's not the one teaching at Cal. ;)

rofflez: Wheeler is on the other side of the road from Barrows, the side closer to Evans, so it should shave off ~1-2 minutes from your walk, which certainly helps but probably won't make or break you.

ahh nice. i suppose i'll just have to walk fast and wear extra deodorant on those days or something :P
