We've started choosing classes for next year (senior year) at school. As of now, my schedule looks like this

AP Biology
AP English (Literature)
AP Calculus BC
AP French
AP Economics
Physics
Gym

The only thing is... I dislike French. I get good grades in the class, but our French education has been very interrupted to say the least. Sophomore year, we had a teacher, he got fired, had a sub for a month, got another teacher, he got fired, had a sub for 2 monthes, then had a decent-ish teacher for 1 month before the school year ended. So basically we are a year behind. No way am I taking the AP French test, I simply don't know enough French.

My question is this, should I drop AP French to take Computer Programming (not AP) or just bite the bullet and stick it out for another year? I'm in French IV now and am in my 3rd year of French. I know that some colleges (Princeton, which I am thinking of applying to) like 4 years of a foreign language.

Do you have any previous experience in computer programming? Is that a field you're considering going into, or is that an elective that you just want to try out?

If it's the latter, I think you should just stick with AP French.

i think you should stick with French because a)you seem to do good in it b) colleges do like four years of foreign language c) it's AP and d)if you really are that behind in french, by the time you take the ap exam, if you so choose, you;ll already be accepted to college.:D

I took spanish, but I also had a teacher who quit halfway through and handed things over to a long term sub. As a consequence, I am NOT taking spanish this year but I AM taking computer programming. :D Other than that, your schedule is identical to mine, 'cept I took AP chem, not AP Bio.

Someone mentioned that it's a pretty demanding schedule, but I find it managable. Of course, it all depends on your teachers; my friend is taking AP Bio and apparently it is insanely hard (but obviously specific to the teacher; you should see the ten-page, meticulously done lab reports that she slashes 65's across.) On the other hand, my Calc teacher is good and my physics teacher is just awesome in general.

As for the french/computer programming dilemma: is there not an AP computer science class available for you to take? If not, you could self-study for the AP test-- lots of my apps asked what tests I was planning on taking, so that might show up on your app anyway. Of course, I'm pretty biased, because I've been taking computer science for three years now and I love it. You may want to see if it's something that appeals to you. Find out what language the class uses, find an online tutorial and try to write a simple program. (Hello World is the standard; any decent beginners' tutorial will most likely start out with it.)

If you find that you are bored and your reaction to the final output is "So what?", you may want to stick with French. On the other hand, if it's pleasing and find yourself overly delighted when your program works, I'd take the computer programming. Don't worry too much about confusion or frustration; the confusion goes away, while you get used to the frustration. :)
