Yet Another "Should I bother"

I haven't really considered applying out of State, Oklahoma resident, because of my "average transcript," but some friends have talked me into it. So I was wondering if there is a "reasonable" chance that I could be accepted to U of C. Here's my stats so far:.

Attend a selective math and science school (regional OSSM) for half a day then return to my high for the rest of the school day.

And if it counts for anything, a senior who is also an independent student (I live on my own).
I predict my essays to be decent to great and I should have outstanding recommendations from my teachers.

Other then U of C I'll be applying to Purdue (aunt was a teacher there) and the University of Oklahoma-full ride thanks to the ACT score.
If anyone was wondering I would like to go to U of C because not only is it one of the greatest schools in the nation, but from the stories I have heard on the College Board the school would be perfect for my eccentric mind.

you should definitely bother--this school would fit you a lot better than purdue or u of oklahoma, and i think you have an excellent chance. apply EA (it's totally non-binding, you can even apply EA to other schools). just write great, quirky essays and hope for the best.

odyssy5red thanks for your uplifting response. Also my family isn't very financially stable. How generous is U of C in handing out financial aid? Also my sister is an attorney in Chicago so if it was needed I could live with her, is that allowed as a freshmen?

Go to http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/level3.asp?id=68
That should answer your fin aid question. as for staying with your sister, im not sure, but i think they may allow that.

deltaG,
I also think you should apply, but be aware that your AP scores from your junior year aren't going to do you a lot of good. Your essays will be very important. If you can visit the campus and interview it would be a good thing.

You do not have to send your AP scores. Write good essays, being from Oklahoma may be a plus, and make a heartfelt statement about why Chicago in the "why Chicago" essay.

Thanks for your comments. Should I consider taking the SATs even though they aren't required?

SAT's are not necessary. My S took only the ACT and was admitted. Your ACT is just fine as it is. Your GPA is higher than his as well. His EC's were strong, and he wrote very good essays. Work on those essays, and, if you can, visit. You have an excellent chance at Chicago. Good luck.

definitely apply if the school appeals to you. as idad notes, the essays are key.

Since your ACT 34 converts into a 1520 SAT, I would not waste the time nor money on SAT I. But, if you feel particularly strong in any subjects, you could consider the SATII's -- Math 2 for sure, and something in the humanities area -- Chicago likes demonstrated breadth to go with their Core. You could take the October test and wait to send the scores to see if they would help (700+ is real nice), and then rush them for EA.

Pickup the CB SATII book, and try a couple of practice tests to see which tests might show you the best.

Yes, if you take SAT II's, wait to see the results, and only send if they are good. Pick up the Real SAT II's and see how the practice tests go - you may have to study a bit - but if you have a good background, a little study goes a long way.

Your ACT is fine - no reason to take the SAT.
