Yet another study showing High Schools should start later...

This is a special study given how respectable the the American Pediatricians are

Gist:
-Should start at 8:30 or later
-Less car accidents
-Better grades
-Teenagers should sleep 8:30 - 9:30, so the extra hour is helpful

-
My school starts at 7:45, and ends at 2:25
I would not mind at all starting school at 8:15, then ending 2:55

I’m totally for a late start late end, but there are reasons arguing for the opposite too… Teacher hours, sports, etc. And they all have large lobbying power.

Yeah, I figure they’ll finally start school later once all my kids have graduated!

My school starts at 7:30 and ends at 2:45… You are so lucky that you start later yet you leave earlier.
My school has lots of fights and 3 police officers always there so I’m guessing this could be the reason.

Mine starts at 8:20 and ends at 3:15.

Im starting at 7 and ending at 2:45 this year. I am not a morning person and I wish my school started later like some of yours.

My school starts at 8 and ends around 3:15.

Later end times would generally be a pain for people(like me) who stay after-school and live far away from school.

My school starts at 8 and ends around 2:45. And as much as I would love to start an hour or two later, I feel like I’d just end up staying up later than I already do.

Most teachers want a later start time too

My school starts at 8:37 and ends at 3:50

Mine starts at 7:30am and ends at 2:10pm.

Personally, I’d rather school start and end even earlier (6:30am to 1:10pm)

Mine starts at 7:45 (:expressionless:

If we started later, kids would actually be AWAKE for their classes and get more education. Isn’t that the point of school?

And you know what’s more frustrating? My school was actually planning on starting later, but it was voted “NO” by all of the dumb sports parents. UGH! X(

It sounds like a good idea in theory, but when I’m at school from 9-4 (3:55), it’s not as great as you think. We actually would like to start and end earlier because it’s weird to end school at 4, still participate in after school activities, get home at ~7, eat dinner, shower, and then actually do your homework for the next day. So the student and teacher consensus in our county is to start at around 8:15-8:30 so we can end at ~3ish.

My school starts at 7:30 and ends at 2:45…just like @learner83‌. However, you do have the option of blocking first period, which I did both as a freshman and a junior. Notably, I also performed better academically during those years…

I ALMOST moved to a school that starts at 7:25 and ends at 2:01 as a junior, but my parents pulled the plug. Couldn’t have been happier from an academic standpoint, but I still hate my schoolmates :p

Gosh school is so short for you guys. I start at 8:15 and end at 3:30…

@SnickersU‌ I’d honestly prefer the longer school day that you have if it meant not waking up at 5:50am to catch a bus…

7:30 to 2:08 here. Yeah an extra hour or so of sleep would he nice :-?

7:30 - 2:15

If school started later they would just stay up later…

@Spiral7‌ you’re generalizing…
Many students already stay up until way past midnight, and, contrastingly, many others go to sleep actually trying to get 7-9 hrs of sleep. I don’t think pushing the start time back an hour or two will effect either of those student types.

My school starts at 7:15 and ends at 2:15, but since I go to a magnet school instead of my zoned school, the school is farther away and the bus is shared with another magnet school. My bus comes at 5:56 in the morning, and I get off of the bus in the afternoon at about 3:30. I usually sleep on the rides if I can.

@lbad96‌

What do you mean by blocking first period? Like skip it?

I honestly would have moved to that school. 40 mins less of school is always nice. Why didn’t your parents let you?
Did that school only have 6 classes a day compared to 7?
