So my son gets his deferral letter (the "#1" letter as others have referred to here on the forum) and he is CRUSHED!!! He's been accepted to MSU but he REALLY wants to be a Wolverine. We're trying to lift his spirits by telling him it is still being reviewed. He applied to LSA - what are his chances for acceptance? Here's his brief breakdown:

ACT: 30 (96th percentile ranking in science)
GPA: ~3.87
Current curriculum: College lit, AP calc, Human biology, Psychology, Global issues, Yearbook
Has been involved with National Honor Society the past 2 years.
Has played organized hockey since age 6 (he opted not to play this year to focus on academics and he has a part time job)

A friend of his was admitted to the engineering program with a 27 ACT and a 4.0 gpa and he's wondering "what's up with that?"

He sounds like a likely candidate for admission. Hopefully he has taken 4-5 ap classes and has good rec’s and essays. If he has only 1-2 ap classes his odds probably go down quite a bit.

I was admitted to the College of Engineering with 3.88 UW GPA (4.62 W) and 2010 SAT (Equivalent ACT 30). Basically, the reason he didn’t get admitted is because he only has 1 extracurricular activity: soccer. Nobody cares about NHS unless you hold a leadership position.

Is it worth it for my S to apply now? sat 1st time 610 CR 740 M 630 W 2nd time 630 CR 690M 690 W Does Michigan not superscore? Also his GPA is 4.0W out of 4.3-4.4 but that includes freshman year. If they only look at soph and jr year then his gpa would be 4.1. He has taken 5 AP’s including Calc, 2 Physic courses, Comp Science,History. He wants to apply for computer engineering and had first thought Michigan was too far but now wants to apply. Do you think he has a chance?

test 101 i think he will get in, I know of many kids that go to UM that did not have many ec’s. Besides he has played hockey (not soccer) which is a very time consuming sport. His mom did not say if that was a weighted or unweighted gpa ien her post or how many ap’s total he has taken.

His GPA is unweighted. He had a bad experience his sophomore year with an AP class and subsequently dropped it in the first month and was gun shy his junior year to take an AP class. The end of his junior year, his guidance counselor advised him if he desired to go to UM, he had better take 1 or 2 AP classes his senior year. He is currently taking AP calculus so in answer to your above post, he has only taken 1 AP class. We would have taken AP physics (he took honor physics last year) but since he has decided to get into the medical field, he was advised to take a human biology class.

And yes, hockey was a very time consuming sport. 2-3 practices a week and 1-2 games on the weekend from September thru March.

Should he retake his ACT’s or take the SAT’s?

act is fine as is his grade point for instate. Cross your fingers…it’s the lack of ap classes that may be the issue. Nothing you can do about that at this point but keep senior year grades up.

My friend’s son got in with 1 AP (chemistry). He has a 3.99 GPA though. He is also in Ann Arbor Huron High, which has a great reputation. My friend said other kids with his statistics in that school consider UM as safety.

Your son’s friend has a 4.0GPA which is much more valued than higher standard test scores. Out of the 160 points UM assigns to various factors, GPA gets 80 points, ACT gets 40, EC gets 20, the rest gets 20. That shows you how GPA is most important.

Your son should still try. 3.87 is not bad.

The high school’s reputation does have an impact too as the poster above me said.
I was told at the um info meeting in our town by the head guy that my d’s school was fine, but if she went to the school to the south that borders our district, the app would be looked at differently. So it seems as if high schools are rated. Pretty easy to look at past students performances at UM to have an idea about the quality of education the high school churns out.
