I was wait-listed at UCSC yesterday. At first I was disappointed and thought it was because I didn't qualify, but then my friends started getting accepted and some of them were VERY questionable if someone as qualified as me did not get accepted. I have a 3.9 weighted and a 33 on the ACT. UCSC released the averages of the accepted students and the average HS GPA was a 3.82 and the ACT average just below a 27. Now onto my evidence: I have a friend who got a 32 on the ACT (he's very smart but very lazy), but he is credit deficient and taking extra courses to graduate high school. I have another friend with a 3.2 and he got a 25 on the ACT and an 1800 on the SAT. I just don't understand why they would be accepted and not me, and they are white and asian respectively, so race was not a factor.

Although I am hoping to attend Pomona College (results pending), Santa Cruz was likely my second choice. I don't want to make excuses and am still skeptical that there is a yield protect at some UCs, but this just seems strange to me considering SC was one of my safety schools.

Hi,

I am in the same situation as you; I have a 40/45 for IB (predicted) and scored a 2230 on the sats (Single sitting). I was waitlisted at UCSD and Babson while others with 1800’s got in. I think the reason may be because some schools believe you may be using them as a safety school and wont attend if accepted; this means that the rankings of the school will fall. I would email UCSC and try and provide more information to get off the waitlist; hopefully, you’ll get into Pomona. Wish you the best of luck!!

What are the unweighted GPA’s of the above posters? That is what the UC’s seem to focus on. SATs above 2200 don’t seem to get you very far unless you have a correspondingly high GPA.

As far as yield protection, I don’t think any schools care about that. It would reduce the average SAT scores of the admitted students, and colleges care a lot more about that than about yield.

I have a 3.5 unweighted In a very difficult course load (plenty of Honors and AP courses and 4 years of French along with an award-winning political academy) which is much better AND more rigorous than my friends listed above. I also found out that one kid at my school got into UCSC but was denied admission at Sac State, which is almost impossible to NOT get into for a local.

I got waitlisted too! I read that last year they took everyone who opted in on the waitlist but the year before they accepted no one off the waitlist so I’m really nervous (source is Ms Sun’s admissions blog if you’ve heard of it). It may have been your major. While UCSC says no majors are impacted and they don’t take major choice into account, they secretly do so if you chose Business, Bio, Psych, and idk any other popular ones, it was harder for you to get in.
I had a 3.37 weighted GPA, 2090 SAT score, 31 ACT score, and a good, decent amount of ECs. While my GPA was on the low side, I feel like my first choice major (Undecided in Business and Econ, I forgot my second choice) was what got me waitlisted considering kids who had lower stats and didn’t do as much as me got in so I too think it is rather unfair. Looks like I’ll be going to UCR unless UCSC accepts me off the waitlist. Anyways good luck to you and fingers crossed for both of us (did you get into Pomona?)!

It is a holistic evaluation – stats are not the whole picture of any student. My D14 was accepted at both UCSC and UCSD with an UW gpa of 3.85 and a UC gpa of 4.12, 2030 SAT and 31 ACT. She attends a dual enrollment school, and will graduate HS one friday, and graduate the community college the following friday with an AA. So pretty high stats for UCSC, and not fitting your theory. She is planning on attending UCSC, as she thinks it’s a better fit for her long term goals and personality.
