Yikes! Tuition increase

I just saw that tuition for incoming students next year will be $36,950! Ouch.

Oh man- that's beastly. I think there might be a chance that junior/senior year costs (if you still live on campus, that is) at CMU or any comparable school will be in excess of $50k yearly... the state school is starting to look pretty nice right about now.

You can't be fing serious...

what I love is that they gave me my financial aid estimate, and the amount of money they expect me to pay is actually a couple thousand MORE than what my parents make in a year. HA! Financial aid... yeah okay. I think we'll just not eat so I can go to CMU.

Son got a postcard from CMU today that shows 2007-08 Proposed tuition and fees as a total of $49,505!

Tution/Fees $37,544
Room/Board $9,660
Books/Supplies $ 966
Personal/Misc $1,335

Total $49, 505

YIKES!

Hmm...

My DS graduated CMU in '05 (thank goodness)_

I found his first bill, from fall '00 (he went 5 years, got masters):

fall undergrad tuition....$12300
standard double room....$2000
Dine extra, campusxpress, 22 meals/2 weeks....$2300
Other fees....about $500

semester total $17108

Increase in past 7 yrs from about 34K to 47K. Most of the increase appears to be in tuition.

What's scary is what will these places cost 10, 20 or 30 years from now???

Well, when I went to CMU (1980 grad), it cost around $5,000 - $6,000/yr!

This is just fantastic. The cost of CMU has always been my largest concern about going there and that concern just got a little bit more serious than it already was. Sigh...

Yikes, that's pretty bad. I didn't know they hiked up tuition THAT much. It's pretty much going to cost another 10 grand for everything now including room and board, etc.

Tutition is crazy, I agree. But for prospective students- after the first year, almost no one gets a full meal plan because it's way too much food, and it's a bit overpriced. Also, quite a few people move off campus into either cheaper or better living arrangements. It's not a huge difference, but every bit helps. Also, everyone I know who wants a job on campus has one.

I'm in the same boat as you nilkin :( its probably going to prevent me from going..

Airu and nilkin, I feel your pain. I was banking on financial aid to give me the opportunity to go to CMU, but with this increase and my "estimated aid package" it looks liike CMU is out of the picture even if i do get in

Tuition is pretty hefty, for sure. To Airu, nilkin, ehiunno and anybody else who got into CMU but can't afford to go...don't dispair. Our family has been through this and I can guarantee you that will not prove to be the end of the world. Sometimes things work out for the best.

lkf725: I'm not in yet, but I am hoping! CMU is a truly amazing school. I really loved it when I visited and I will be pretty upset if I get in and can't afford to go. It won't be the end of the world, I have great scholarship offers from other good schools, but I would hate to have finances shut me out of such an amazing opportunity. I am not buying the idea that taking out 150k in loans to go a school is better than going to a state school (for a menial amount with scholarships).

Yeah, I know. A $150K loan would give you 120 monthly payments of $1726 at 6.8%. That is an astronomical amount for a new grad, and unless your family is wealthy that that amount of debt would probably limit your choices of employment and grad school. But maybe you will get some nice financial aid...you never know! Good luck!

I informed my parents of the tuition increase and they are very unhappy about this.. I didn't apply for financial aid... so.. yeah. I dont think my parents want me to attend CMU anymore. But I do!

To be honest, I think tuition increase is necessary to accomodate the inflation. 3% inflation each year makes living cost to rise 50% every 10 years.

College costs have been and are rising much faster than inflation. There is no incentive for colleges to cut costs. Increased costs are passed on to students. My dad works at a college, and says that they just increase tution and fees and pass the costs on to the students.

YIKES! "

Response: Actually, it can be argued that CMU and other top schools are charging too little! The reason: they have vastly more applicants than they can accept. Thus, too many people feel that the tuition must be steal.

Frankly, my daughter went elsewhere since we got zero financial aid. We just didn't think it was worth it and neither did my daughter.
