Yo i be loooooooooooken for some schoooooooools. Ayudame por favor.

Hey im a white upper-middle class guy from mississippi. Im looking to major in Anthropology. I need help finding a few more match and safety schools to apply to. My preferences are as follows (but they are by no means set in stone, i would appreciate and consider any input or sugestions):

Size: I would prefer a small to medium size school but would definately consider a large school with an honors college or a low student/faculty ratio.

Location: Really anywhere away from the miserable heat and humidity of south mississippi. Preferably not in MS, LA, FL, or southern AL and GA.

Price: For my matches and safeties im looking for schools with either fairly low pricetags or lots of merit aid(that i may qualify for).

Vibe(posibly the most important characteristics): laid back, intelectual, moderate to fairly liberal(i guess most colleges are), not too preppy, not overtly dominated by greek life, open minded, fairly idealogically and experiencially diverse, hard working student body without being really competetive, ect. ect

To keep these suggestions within my reach ill give some brief stats

White male, fairly large public HS MS
SAT: 1490 or 2180
CR: 770
M: 720
W: 690
ACT: 32
Taking SATIIs soon
UW GPA: 3.8
W GPA: 3.9 maybe 4.0
Rank: Definately top 10% probably top 4% or 5%, class size 300-350

EC:
a few school clubs
local gigging musician
NHS
3 mission/relief trips to Honduras
1 mission/relief trip to Navajo Nation
semester as exchange student in Spain

List so far (including reaches):
UChicago
WashU in STL
Davidson
Rice

Considering(if you dont think some of these fit me please say so)
UNC chapel hill
UT knoxville
college of charleston(too preppy???)
maybe NYU (good location)
maybe Tulane (alls good except the heat)

also applying to a few instate schools as safeties.

well thanks guys, any comments and suggested schools would be appreciated.

Ayudame por favor means help me please............

thank you

Beloit (Wisconsin) would be an excellent choice for a safety. Strong anthropology program and the "vibe" that you described. Located about an hour north of Chicago.

Consider:

Macalester (please! it sounds too perfect for you!)
Oberlin
Haverford
Carleton
Wesleyan
Rochester
Tufts

All pretty reachy, but given what you're looking for in a school and what you have to offer, I think they are realistic considerations.

cool ill definately consider some of those.

If you don't like the heat, Charleston will be hell.

However, if you like girls, and lots of STD's, then Charleston's the perfect fit.

thanks guys ill remove charleston from the list.

Also, Houston is notorious for being insanely hot & humid. Might want to rethink Rice (although it is a fantastic college).

thanks guys, i know thats houstons pretty hot, ive been there, but belive me its not as humid as south mississippi. Also i think i could take the heat for a school as good as rice in a city as big as houston. thanks

Have you considered the Pacific Northwest? Whitman could be a match, University of Puget Sound or Willamette could be safeties. Whitman is very very rural, the other two are in small cities (Tacoma and Salem, respectively). The three also offer great merit aid, since they have to try harder to attract people from outside of CA, WA, and OR. They all have great student/faculty interactions.

As a safety, I second Beloit. Has a rep as quirky and intellectual and its anthropology department is supposed to be tops at the school and one of the tops in the nation. Bard is a little more selective; Earlham is interesting, but it's a "dry" school. It all depends on what you mean by laid-back...

Cool ive been researching the schools you mentioned and have found a few i will look into further and may apply to.

Oberlin-maybe a reach, but seems nice
Macalester- expensive, but i really like it
URochester- kind of cold, but still nice
Whitman- very rural, but overall may be a good fit
Willamette- Looks a nice safety, thanks
Beloit- yeah seems like a really good match

thank for all the great suggestions, please keep them coming.

also, im not just looking for liberal arts colleges. any universities, even large public universities, could be options

do you live in biloxi or gulfport or ocean springs?

i used to live there. I agree, the heat is absolutly miserable because of the humidity

Try cornell. Its in nice cold new york and it is a superb school. Play katrina to your game like I did. That is how i got into stanford. But my house was really obliterated.

I actually live in a town about an hour north of the coast. Im not sure that id like to give the name online. But yeah, my dad, whom i live with half the time, lost his house. My moms house had a good bit of roof damage.
