Can anyone tell me what this college is like?
If they go there, how is it? Do you like it? What's the best thing you like about it? Or if you don't, why?

I'm sorry, I tried to find a thread about this college on here, but I just couldn't find it.

Kind of late, but I just finished up my Freshman year there. I graduated highschool with a 3.6 GPA, 4 AP classes completed and an 1800 SAT score. Major pluses to the school is that its private but still has a very reasonable price tag (about 15K a year for me when my academic scholarship is taken into account). Also the school is growing rapidly, it more than doubled its size around 2007 with the opening of West Campus and a North Campus is under construction. On a more personal note i really love it their, my classes, my housing, my friends and activities are all excellent. The only drawback is that the list of majors isn’t as large as you would find at a large school like PSU, but it is still respectable.

In my Philly suburb, it has little respect among the high school crowd. As a parent, I attribute this to the fact that we have so many private schools in the region with high rankings and/or recognizable sports. IMO, the value of the school is wonderful. It provides a solid education cheaper than the in-state name options. Of the kids that embrace the school and to hell with the rankings, the only negative I have heard is the same negative I hear about many LACs - it can feel like high school with many knowing too much of your personal business.

I went to York College. I graduated quite a while ago ('98) so some of this information will be outdated.

The school now properly categorizes itself as a “baccalaureate” college rather than an LAC because many of its programs (criminal justice, nursing, education) are career-training oriented.

I was unhappy at York and think it was a huge mistake for me to go there. I found the student body to be very conservative both socially and politically. I did not fit in at all. It was not a good “fit” for me; it may be for you. The mass communications major was more technical than I had anticipated with little focus on creativity. (This was before colleges had Web sites.)

There was also a high number of dropouts. After my first semester, about half of the people on my floor did not return. And people I was friendly with would just disappear.

The caliber of the students there was not what I would call high, although of course there were exceptions. (This was 14 years ago, and I know things change.) I, for one, admit I was not prepared for the college experience and would have done better going to community college for a year or two and then transferring to a better school.

The recent alumni newsletter gave an entire half-page in their “Alumni Update” section to a man who was named an honorary West Virginian.

I graduated from York 6 years ago… Loved it there. You can PM me if you would like more info.

It’s big enough that there is a decent amount of offerings but it’s small enough that once you pick a major you will be part of a close knit group and everyone knows everyone including your professors. I had one prof get me a job during my senior year. It just depends on what you like. If you would rather be student number 5385 in a lecture hall where you can be invisible you should look somewhere else. By the time I graduated I had worked on assignments or projects with literally every single person in my major and we all were friends. The people are great, the atmosphere is great, it was all great. I still have a bunch of friends in the area and come back about once a month or so. There are a bunch of clubs and activities and things like that. I was part of Habitat for Humanity so we built houses in the area during the school year and we spent spring break each year in Florida building a house.

I wouldn’t necessarily call it conservative. York as a whole is a rather “republican” community although it has been getting more liberal over the past 10 years… but the school gets a good mix of people. I was part of the college democrats when I went there and I don’t think the republicans even had a club… if they did, it couldn’t have been a very big one because I didn’t know about it. (I mean no offense by that.)

It’s been growing a lot lately. Since I have left they have a new gym and a new humanities center. I think some kind of biology building is coming soon according to my latest newsletter.

This is really late, but thanks everyone! Your responses did help and I’m applying for York College of Pennaylvania next year.
Despite it being Division III, which I really don’t mind anyway, I’m definitely excited to apply.
I’ve done many researches about this college since I last posted about and and I do have to say it’s really amazing. It became one of my top choices, if not, the top.

If you guys have anything else to add about this college, good or bad factors, please feel free to. (:

Any other input on York would be helpful to my family as my son has been accepted there and is considering going for Comp Sci and Div3 sports. Anyone know anything about the Computer Science degree? One thing I noticed when visiting was that it was not very diverse in ethnicity compared to VA Public Universities. This is not a minus or plus just different. I wondered about the neighborhood to the north of the school and if that area had a higher rate of crime. The campus grew on me from the first visit to the second. I wondered about the food and meal plans. There is not much within walking distance, except the Rutters, if you wanted something different to eat or during off hours. Do most kids have cars? Thanks.

There is a regional bus system that connects to most major destinations and shopping centers in the county, and the central city bus station where all the routes come together is not far from campus. Therefore, I don’t think a car is needed. I’ve heard some complaints about parts of the neighborhood to the north as far as crime, but it is nothing serious compared to a big city.

There is a huge hospital within walking distance, which is a big plus for nursing and other health care students.

Not all students had cars but some did. I had mine there all four years but knew plenty of people who didn’t. There used to be a papa johns and a rita’s as well as a few local pizza places within walking distance… I’m assuming they are all still there. My friends and I used to go out to places within driving distance - pretty much any fast food resteraunt, 2 malls, bowling alleys, etc. We did weekend trips to Baltimore as well.

I heard the securities were very strict in this schoool. Like, they would be crashing parties in a matter of minutes once they find out about it. Is that true?

york has a very good nursing program - they actually have bachelors, masters, and even doctorates in nursing. It’s one of the most popular ones and has really good placement from what i have heard.

UPDATE:
I just finished and submitted my application two days ago; my counselor should be sending in my transcript this week. I can’t wait!
Can’t believe it’s been over a year since I started this thread.
This is a school I definitely want to go to.
Thanks everyone!

My neighbor’s son graduated from York College a couple of years ago. He transferred there from Muhlenberg, after his father lost his job and could no longer pay the high price tag. York is much more reasonably priced. He chose it for the price tag and for its lacrosse team. His major was related to business, but I don’t recall the exact nature of it. He did have a job in Baltimore lined up before graduation. His parents were very happy!

TimebOmb, did you get accepted and attend York? My daughter just got accepted to the nursing program but feeling very pressured to send the $500 deposit in because of the possibility of being put on a wait list. Also, they appear to want your deposit before you are invited to admitted students day? Never heard of that. Thanks.

carolmsn, you’re posting on an old thread. all the previous posters probably don’t read this forum any longer. ask your question at college admissions or parents forum.
