@TexasStudent2018, I think you are correct in saying that the ‘Prepare for the Extraordinary’ email was a mass email as my S19 received it and has not applied. He also recieved a nice catalogue from them a couple of weeks ago but will not be applying (loves the school but his stats fall below what they are looking for).
I also think thats probably right. To confirm did anyone get accepted with anything other than a 32 ACT score and $15,000 scholarship offer? Also what is the cutoff for the $7,500 scholarship and is it automatic if you have a certain score?
It’s on the Clemson webpage…The way it is worded, it does seem to be automatic for the $7500. If you read the fine print and *, it says that there’s still consideration for students at non-ranking schools and if your test scores are strong, then maybe you can slip past top 10% a little bit. But there doesn’t seem to be any latitude on the cutoff of 1360 and 29.
Here’s the wording:
For 2018-19 year, domestic out-of-state students with at least a 1360 (EBRW+M) on the SAT or a 29 on the ACT composite and who are ranked*** in the top 10%* of their high school class will receive a renewable merit scholarship of at least $7,500. Students with higher test scores will be considered for these merit scholarships up to $15,000 annually.
thx. so for a 30 ACT (school does not do class rank), the $7500 should be guaranteed?
No, not necessarily. I think they still look at your grades to see if they are in the range of top 10%. They don’t just ignore grades, but they aren’t going to penalize you if your school doesn’t rank. They have resources on the schools and they can guess about where you fall. This is how they explained it to me at Discover Clemson. But if your grades are in that range, then it does sound like the $7500 is automatic.
@mweb136 The highest merit students sometimes get acceptance letters in November and December, but no one are is notified of Honors College acceptances yet. That is separate. I believe Honors college acceptances will be emailed on Feb 15. The dates are on the website. There is no advantage to applying early for Honors.
Are there other scholarship opportunities for OOS in addition to the $7,500-$15,000? I don’t think we will be eligible for FA and without more money, not sure if Clemson will be competitive with other offers.
@paparent106 Check the website. They have all their scholarships listed there.
For those who have been receiving the $15,000 scholarship, what are your test scores and when did you apply?
@bgill33 a girl at my school got the $15,000 and applied early september. She’s top 10% and has a 34 ACT composite I believe. It seems like those with a 33 or above got the $15,000
Is there any wiggle room on the Class rank? 4.83 weighted GPA - 3.9 unweighted. 29 ACT (30 if they Superscored). Class rank is closer to 17% out of 675 kids due to large IB program. OOS high school is third largest in the state. NHS, Honor Council, co VP of a club jr year. Won a departmental award junior year. One full IB Spanish 4. And 6 APs.
also, if first wave went out on Friday for the $15,000 scholarship recipients, does anyone have an idea when the next wave of acceptances will go out ($7,500 scholarships)?
@bgill33 These acceptances are not tied to when you applied. They are tied to test scores, GPA, etc.
@Baxter126 I was just unsure on how early those that had received theirs had applied. My application was submitted in mid October and my test scores/GPA should be good enough to receive merit.
My son is OOS and top 20% at a competitive HS. High GPA, transferring in 45 credits of dual enrollment and AP and I have gone with him to Clemson three times and have been informed that this year if you are not top 10% but more 20-25% you need a 1400 to qualify for $7500. That is the most they will offer for OOS. I heard sometimes there is 2500 for financial need, but that is the most that will be offered for merit. Hope that helps and good luck!
That is great info for my ds. He is 1400 but right outside top 10 percent. I just want him to get in!! Did they give you a pretty good feeling about being admitted. We got a good feeling from them at discover Clemson but until it comes in writing, I won’t believe it @mweb136
@aggiesomeday123 yes, they did! are you OOS? We are from NJ. They told me last year you needed a 1380 bu since they got such strong applicants they raised it this year to 1400. Luckily my son just got a 1420. My son wants to enter the business school. Whatabout yours?
@bgill33 I just mean that it doesn’t matter when you applied; there’s no connection to how early you applied and getting these letters. The acceptances seem to be sent by major or college, so for example, all the Science majors at my son’s school received theirs at the same time, Business majors a few days later. However, the early letters are not mailed to 100% of the merit qualified applicants. It could be someone’s class rank, or course rigor, or major that prevents one from getting their letter early or from getting merit aid. I have also seen candidates who are strong in some ares but perhaps a little weak on one area (like low test scores) get letters later. I wouldn’t be discouraged if you have high scores etc. All the best!
My D was accepted last week with 33 ACT and class rank well on top 10%. She was offered the $15,000 OOS merit scholarship. My son is currently in his second year at Clemson. He received his acceptance in early November also. He was offered the $15,000 OOS merit scholarship with 34 ACT and class rank in the top 10%. He is in Calhoun Honors. I don’t believe they send out any decisions until February.
