people in my classes tell me that I'm so smart and that I could get into any college I wanted to, I think I may believe them if I weren't a member of CC. It kind of makes me think that they're ignorant, but then again they haven't seen some of the stuff you CCers have done, and I realize it's you people that I'm competing against to get into top schools. has anyone else had a similar experience? Thought you were top dog till you joined CC?

Yeah, I’ve had people who are like “you are so smart etc” and then I come on this site and I’m like “…”

Story of my life. I’m betting against myself for UChicago - $40 of betting. My friends think that I’m a genius and that I could get into Harvard all willy nilly.

But my 32 ACT is like nothing here.

This is a conversation I had the other day.

Guy in front of me: You’re going to Harvard right?
Me: Lololololol no.

The point of here is for overacheivers to feel good about themselves most of the time and make people like you feel stupid

My life every day in class:

People: You`re so smart! I wish I was as smart as you

Me thinking to myself: “If only you knew about CC…”

What if this is actually a community of mentally disabled people, and everyone around us is just being nice and let us believe that we’re so smart.

Absolutely. People at my school tell me I can get into any college I want just because I got 33 on the ACT, but that’s not how it works at all. I wish it were that easy.
Even the 4.0 students at my school end up at community college. It’s extremely disheartening.

And this teacher was trying to help this girl with her essay, suggesting she write things like, “I would make a great addition to your [whatever] program because I wonderful interpersonal skills.” And I’m thinking…that’s not an interesting essay, it doesn’t sound passionate, and it’s not going to work at all. Everyone thinks throwing around random big words somehow makes an amazing essay. (Not that “interpersonal” is a big word, but it is a pretentious and off-putting word.)
And I wouldn’t have realized that before this website.

lol i know. you guys are so smart. i don’t really have an anecdote to share like y’all though.

==

^ and that essay could totally work. most students have a hard enough time of faking presentability as it is, that i don’t think poking them to be interesting (rather than presentable) would be better general advice.

My mom thinks I can breeze into Harvard. I tell her about the competition I’m facing, but she doesn’t get it. Little does she know how much I struggle in math. She thinks I’m a wizard just because I got an A in Calc. Yet here I am going insane studying for my math II (or math I, we’ll see) sat subject test. :’(

@alex: my parents are like “you’re going to fail at life”.

Nope. There are kids at my school much smarter than me.

it’s weird when parents have delusions about their kid. and when the kid recognizes those delusions and has to put up with them.

Oh dear god, story of my life everyday.

People: “Ehmahgahd you’re so smart, you can get into like any college you want!”
Me: “Have you…ever heard of CC…and the people who get into these kinds of schools? If only you knew…”

I always look through the stats of people who get into top colleges, and they get better and better every year, so it is very disheartening.

Wow, so many other people share my pain, that makes me feel better. I know this kid who’s not as smart as me, but thinks he’s bound for top ivies because people tell him he is, I never tell him about CC, because it provides me a motivational edge. Do any of you tell others about CC? I know no one else personally who uses it, and tell no one…

Uh, no. 10char

People think I’m just a tad short of being a genius.
With my 2040 SAT & low-mid 90 GPA (junior year is kicking my ***. 91 avg. this quarter)

Thought I was hot stuff since I’m top 4% in my class and have taken mostly Advanced/Dual Enrollment classes…Came here and got smacked in the face by simultaneously perfect SAT and ACT scores and 26383286 AP’s…

I have noticed that the majority of people on this site are extremely smart and passionate, but are almost as extremely paranoid and worried about college that they used this site as a tool to get random strangers to tell them how smart and passionate they are already know they are.

@rolling
That sucks. :\ I don’t know which is worse. When your parents believe you to be smarter than you are or when they believe you to be dumber. T_T
