So, GW is pretty much a reach for me, so I was wondering whether I should even apply with these stats. I do have other schools and this is not my #1 choice, but I still like it.

White, Male, PA, Going to be Senior
SAT - 1640/2400 (I know, horrible)
ACT - Going to take in September (Scores to be 25-27)
Rank - 65/551
GPA - 4.12 W/3.77 UW
Intended Major - Chemistry (Pre-Med)

Classes
Mostly Honors
Junior Year - AP Calculus BC (5)
Senior Year - AP Euro, AP Chem, AP Spanish

EC
Tennis (9-12, Varsity 11)
Bowling (6-12)(Not for school, Captain 9-12)
NHS (11-12)
SHS (11-12)
Model UN (9)
Altar Server (5-12)(80 hrs)
Hospital Volunteer (9)(50+ hrs)
NYLF-Medicine (summer before 12)

Your SAT is too low as it stands, everything else looks good though so hopefully you aced your ACT

Also, what ACT score would halp me?

GW's ACT's middle 50% range is 27-31. Hopefully, you will score within or higher than that range.

At CI they said the ACT range was 26-30, but if your stats are below average then you should definitely shoot for over 30, especially if you have a competitive major. The average SAT score is 1920, but again, it should be higher if you have a competitive major. I don't know how competitive chem is.

If you are serious about attending GW I would definitely interview. They like to see genuine interest. I was borderline and got in because I interviewed and visited twice, and e-mailed admissions about how much I wanted to go to GW.

A friend of mine applied last year as a chem major with much better stats than you and got rejected, likely because he didn't show any interest in the school as his stats were certainly better than mine. (Top 5%, 2200-ish SAT, 35 ACT, good ECs)

apply ED if you really want to go to GW... and work work work on that SAT score/ACT score. Also.. maybe consider applying to engineering... I think that is an easier major to get into.

Really. I never considered that.
The thing is I want to go to GW, but not enough to apply ED.

You really need to get your SAT scores up to at the very least 1800. Or try the ACT and get at least a 29. Otherwise, the truth is, your chances are not very good RD. But if you like GW there's nothing to be lost by filing an application.

Wait is your SAT 1640 out of 2400 or is it 1640 (old) and 2400 (new). I am assuming it is 1640 out of 2400 in which case you need to work on it. I would not worry too much. I do not think that GW is that hard to get into. I am going to be a freshman in the fall but then again I may be wrong. I think that everything is fine but just lift the test scores.

I wasn't really planning on taking the SAT's again, so that is why I am going to try the ACT in September. Do you think this is not a good idea, or should I take the SAT's later on (like November or something)?

lol 1640/1600 old.. yeah thats plausible, i think its safe to infer he meant new.

Anyway keep working at the ACT/ SAT and you'll get in, 1600s is really, really, really low

It's very do-able, but you've got to be persistent. But if GW isn't your clear first choice.... don't do ED1. Its binding, so if you're not sure.... apply the persistence to the school that IS your 1st choice.

My son did ED1, he visited summer before Junior year.... went to every college fair in the area during his Junior Year & Senior Fall Semester that GW was represented at & forged a relationship with the AD. He emailed every couple of weeks with "just a question" to keep his name in her head.... and he interviewed. His GC has a fantastic relationship with this particular AD at GWU, so that certainly helped. Given we have a very small school and each of the 2 GCs only have about 50 seniors, she had the time to wage a full-out campaign to get him early decision admission. That said, it wasn't perfect. He got into CAS, but not SMPA, which was his goal. They only take about 30-40 freshmen in SMPA, and took fewer than 10 from the ED pool.

I'm telling you this because his grades/scores were not stellar. They were good, but just at the bottom cusp for GW. GPA was 3.8/4.5; SATs 600M, 650V, 680Wr; and ACT 27. He had lots of good ECs, and, from what we've been told, very good recommendations (we don't get to see them).

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice nymom2sons. That is really helpful. GW is truly not my first choice, so I am not going to apply ED, but I think it is a reach school that I could possibly get into.
