There are over 73 cookies and 73 trackers place on my computer as a result of visiting College Confidential. You have to be kidding! Is there any way you can substantially reduce this and eliminate the tracking cookies?
Interesting, taxguy, I’m pretty sure very few of those are ours, I wonder if they might be coming in from external ads?
I have Adblocker on my desktop but not on my mobile devices. Each time I try to use the app, it triggers the malware warning on my desktop. This is not the first time this has happened.
Chrome is currently blocking my access to most CC pages because of malware issues associated with an advertiser (Collegeview).
I am getting the same block. Here is a link to the explanation:

I just got ranson ware on my pc- assuming it was from cc as that is the only site I visited this morning
Norton blocked two attack attempts this morning on my home machine from an ad (pivotaladvisors.com or something to that effect).
This one appeared as a warning that a java update was required. The popup didn’t have the Sun/Oracle Java logo, so I didn’t bite.
I got a NASTY virus on my computer at home this morning that we will have to try to clean up tonight. It completely took over my computer and locked it down. And of course I too am not getting the malware message. What is going on??
Same here, I clicked on a college confidential link and immediately got a trojan hijack virus. Symantic blocked and deleted it, but not in time to prevent it from locking down my computer and forcing me to do a hard shutdown, then boot up again.
Check your ads before allowing them on your site, or I’m leaving for good.
If you’re infected, you might want to try [Emsisoft</a> Free Emergency Kit: portable malware scanner | Free removal of Viruses,Bots, Spyware, Keyloggers and Trojans](<a href=“http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/eek/]Emsisoft”>http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/eek/). I used it with one of the previous outbreaks.
It’s tempting to blame CC, but the facts of internet life being what they are, if you aren’t exposed here, you’ll be exposed somewhere else. Get a good antivirus and pay the annual maintenance fee so it can update regularly. It’s nasty out there.
I’m using my phone now, since I get the firefox and google warnings on my computer. When or how will I be able to use cc in my computer again?
It doesn’t take much to get added to people’s malware lists but it takes some effort to get off them. Consider that Hobsons doesn’t want to loose ad revenue and is no doubt working on a solution as we speak. When you notice the ads are back, try your computer again.
Do I avoid the problem by having AdBlock on my computer?
Ouch! Make that “lose ad revenue.” :o
I’m not familiar with AdBlock, but based on sabaray’s comment, I’m guessing it doesn’t mask the problem.
Adblock works great until I load the mobile app. Same as last time this problem with malware occurred. Can’t block the bad ads in mobile app.
yup, dadinator- its ransomit or something like that. Nasty virus took over my computer entirely. I am skeeved that microsoft security essentials let it through.
Jym, we use Comcast and Norton is included as part of the package. I did a full scan this afternoon and had no viruses or malware, which was a relief!
Don’t hold your breath folks. My computer was fine today…I did not log onto CC until about 45 minutes ago. Next thing I knew, I was looking at an FBI page with my picture. My DH says this is a windows specific malware. We have tons of security on our system and this got through. I wish the CC gurus would put out a warning for anyone with a Windows machine to do a malware scan NOW.
Since it wasnt a virus but was malware, The microsoft security didnt catch it. I wont use the comcast stuff as it fights with other stuff on our computer and then wants you to pay for higher level of protection (this was discussed in another thread). I will have to run a malware check on my office computer in the morning. Really, there is no excuse for not being warned as soon as this was identified. The FBI ransom malware is a PITA.
We always recommend running both real-time protection and conducting regular scans. Many totally legitimate sites run content or ads delivered in real-time from other sites - if the other site becomes compromised, there can be a window when that content is displayed. We think that’s what triggered the alerts here on CC, but our tech folks are still studying the issue. Since we have not conclusively identified the cause of this, in an abundance of caution we have stopped showing all ads, even those we deliver internally. We’re switching to a new ad system which we feel will better protect our site and our members. Thanks for your patience!
