You know you want to tell me my chances

Rising senior, attend a good NE prep-school
GPA is 5.3/6.0 UW, which places me in the top 10% (school does not rank)
My math/science GPA is 5.7/6.0 UW (to put this in perspective, if this were my overall GPA, I would probably be ranked 1 or 2)

Courses already taken-
Math through multivariable calculus
AP Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Introduction to Spectroscopy
AP Physics
Biology Research
French through third year (diploma requirement)
English through third year (diploma requirement)
Philosophy: Human Nature (diploma requirement)
Some other diploma requirements

Courses to be taken senior year-
AP Computer Science
Honors Math Seminar
Advanced Mechanics
Relativity and Quantum Mechanics
More diploma requirements

My counselor would probably describe my course load as very challenging. (By the way, since I’ve already taken a lot of advanced courses and since I have a bunch of requirements left, my course load next year will be a bit easier. How will this be taken?)

School Awards-
Maynard Prize in Analytical Geometry and Calculus
Wadsworth Prize in Advanced Physics
School Science Bowl Winner

EC’s-

Math Club
126.5 on AMC, 6 on AIME
Top 20 in Massachusetts Association of Mathematics League (MAML)
Top ten in HMMT (Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament) Calculus
Eastern Mass ARML team, Division B site winner

Science Club
National Science Bowl – 2nd place in state
Helped organize school science bowl
Helped build trebuchet

Computer Science Club
2nd place in ACSL (American Computer Science League) competition

Cross Country, Track (Lettered in track, I think)

Testing-

SAT I-2270 (740V/770M/760W)
SAT II’s- 800 Math IIC, 800 Chemistry, Physics in October
APs- 5’s in BC Calc, Chemistry, Physics C

Other-
I think my essays will be good, if not great
My rec’s should be great (my math teacher for Calc and Multivar has already told me that I am the strongest he’s seen in ~13 years of teaching)
I think I’ll submit my Biology research paper on DNA-Based computing even though the results weren’t exactly conclusive
My field of interest will probably be computer science

And now…. Drumroll please, ….. the question:

What is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything?

The more relevant question: what are my chances at the following colleges? Do I stand a chance of getting in early?

MIT (EA)
Caltech (EA)
Stanford
Berkeley
Princeton
Harvard
Carneige Mellon
Olin
Harvey Mudd
RPI

Thanks in advance

Mathwiz

You are in early in MIT and Caltech. :)

It does not matter but why did not you take a history course in school. You should take it as a senior. Did you participate in any math/Science program in summer time such as PROMYS, Math Camp, RSI etc? Your GPA is very good despite the tough course load. Although these things will not matter in the end. You are in pretty good shape.

Is this the list your school GC provided to you:

MIT (EA)
Caltech (EA)
Stanford
Berkeley
Princeton
Harvard
Carneige Mellon
Olin
Harvey Mudd
RPI

usalover,

In my school, we can take history either junior or senior year. Also, we have to take a course in which we do writing every term. I decided to take history senior year so I wouldn't have to take English when I got into a college that doesn't require it.

I didn't participate in any summer programs. I applied for RSI, but didn't get in.

The list consists of colleges I picked, with a couple safeties recommended by my GC.

mathwiz :

If you want to go to any school do not drop English. I know couple of kids from Exeter, and Groton who were not selected because of any English electives in senior year. I do not think Andover has ever send any kid to RSI where as Exeter is pretty good for it. Exeter math department is pretty awsome. However, I could be wrong because information is based on hearsay.

But I hope you discuss this English elective issue with GC and good luck :)

My plan was to drop English after I get in. I doubt a college would rescind acceptance simply because I didn't take any more English.

I know that Andover has sent someone to RSI in each of the three past years, two of whom I know personally. But the exeter math department is great (they've had a bunch of USAMOers and International Science Olypmiaders in the past years)

I'm glad you think this is the case. God willing it will be.

mathwiz:

UCB: Match (out of state, Engineering)

Andover has a good reputation for Physics. I am sure Andover has its share of USAMO kids too.

Let me guess the person who got selcted to RSI must be from US physics team? Am I right or wrong?

normally rsi is a good indication of u getting into MIT...however, w/ those stats, im pretty sure ure a good match for MIT/Caltech. also, remember that caltech is 70 percent male. ur sat score is damn good...but instead of taking physics in october, i would retake SAT I and try to get 2350, getting 800 in math. u need only two sat ii scores anyway, and they're both 800 for you.

Actually our Ricktoid this year is not on the physics team. He's just a straight-up genius. I don't think our Ricktoid last year was either.

about MIT and Caltech, watch your app doesnt seem too stereotypical. you dont have anything volunteer-related, well, at all, which might be a problem with princeton and harvard. dont let yourself look like the overachieving nerd type, there are lots of those. you probably arent one, but just watch out. chances:

MIT (EA): slight reach - ill say deferred - accepted
Caltech (EA): slight reach - accepted
harvard: reach - accepted
princeton: reach - rejected (idk i think the lack of anything at all volunteer-related might hurt)
stanford: reach - accepted
berkeley (OOS): match - accepted
CMU: match-safe match - accepted
harvey mudd: safe match - accpeted
RPI: safety - accepted

Wait...how are you able to have a GPA over a 5.0? AP and Honors classes only give you one point, therefore how is it possible to get over a 5.0?

Either you or one of the other 200 kids in your class will get into those schools. You know what your school sends to those schools every year, figure the odds.
