You Think They'll Be Mad At Me For This?

So, I applied to Cal as a transfer student for the Microbial Biology major. I have finished all my prereqs EXCEPT for a stupid introductory statistics course, which I do not really intend to take before I transfer. So, on the myberkeleyapp update thing-er I told them that I planned to take the stats course during the summer. However, I added in the comment box that my goal for the summer was to obtain an undergrad research internship for the summer and, if I did, I would not be taking the stats course. Also, this spring semester I'm not a full-time student and could have possibly taken it. Do you think they won't like this?

yea, I would assume they would not like this. It makes you look like you’re not really trying to complete their prereqs. Why don’t you want to take it if you dont have a full schedule? Do you have a legitimate excuse that you wrote on your app?

it’d be in your best interest to take the statistics course prior to transferring. Not only would you not have to worry about them rescinding your admission for not finishing a prereq, but you wouldn’t have to take the statistics course at berkeley. The stat department here is hardcore even for the introductory courses. I took an intro stats course at a CCC and i also took a probability courses at berkeley and they literally covered everything i learned about probability from the CCC course in the first week and a half.

Well, it’s not that I don’t have a full schedule. I’m just not a full-time student. I work and volunteer in addition to school, but I don’t know if this is a legit reason. I did not use my outside arrangements as an exuse though. I have all the core bio, chem, calc, physics, and IGETC done… but its just that stats class that is buggin’ me. =/

I think they’ll be mad at you for this…

Yes, they will be upset. I believe that a 1 college level math course is required though so if you’ve already got one you might be fine. otherwise, I would definitely be taking stats in the summer

Hmmm… well, if they want me to go to their school and are really not liking the idea of me having 1 left over undergrad course, they might give me provisional admittance based on whether or not I complete the course before I transfer. Which would suck a**!

But, I hope to get into UCLA because Cal was kind of my back up if I didn’t get into UCLA. If I don’t get either then I’m stuck at Irvine. =[

Why do you prefer UCLA to Cal? I’m just wondering. I applied to and like both schools. Btw it will seem like a missing prereq, but it shouldn’t count that much against you because you have all the other prereqs/IGETC done. I would think that if your stats are otherwise very competitive, you should be fine.

@emilsinclair

Considering only the majors that I applied to, I just prefer MIMG at UCLA over Microbial Biology or MCB at Cal. Mostly, I feel that there is a greater variety of classes available in my discipline at UCLA versus Cal. Plus, there is a minor in Biomedical Research at UCLA that I would like to pursue. Overall, I think I am just more confident choosing UCLA because I have had more opportunities to explore what the school and the area have to offer since I live closer (undergrad research opportunities, hospital volunteer work, biotech jobs in LA, etc).

I think that Cal is a fantastic school as well. I am not, by any means, trying to say I would not have similar opportunities at Cal, but I am just not as familiar with the school or the area. Although I absolutely love the Berkeley campus and the Bay area.

Also, I plan on going to grad school. So, I think the slight prestige inequalities between Cal and UCLA will have no considerable impact on whether or not I am accepted into a graduate program. However, I have heard a handful of times that Cal does not like to accept their own for graduate school; something I had to think about as well.

@ UCcasualty: Ahh I see, that makes sense. Yeah, I feel similarly; I want to stay close to home, and Berkeley is much closer to where I live than UCLA.

Ya know, it’s interesting, I’ve heard that as well about the UCB grad school. I wonder why that is. If that is, indeed, the case, I’ll definitely have to take that point into consideration because I’m also trying to get into med school/business school - I haven’t decided yet lol. Ideally, I would want to stay in the Bay Area (like UCB) but obviously not everything turns out as well as had hoped.

Anyway, thanks for your insight and I wish ya luck at UCLA!

Stats is so easy. Just take it.

^^ I agree with Cupertino. I loved stats. I actually found it easier than algebra 2. That’s just my opinion though.
