Rejected from Northwestern, I deserved it. You should've seen my essays; they're the crappiest ones I ever wrote.

What were you thinking, chibears? How much money did UM give you?

Michigan over Chicago and Urbana is hardly revolutionary. I believe he has mentioned several times that, initially, he did not receive a scholarship from Michigan. Speaking of scholarships, chibears, did you apply for a Keeler?

oh, for whatever it's worth: Berkeley, London School of Economics, Imperial, St. Andrews

michigan over chicago and urbana

he said, Univ of Chicago, which IS A BIT different from UNiv of Illinois at Chicago buddy

bball87,

I believe sonar knows that he meant the university of chicago. He is simply saying that choosing Michigan over Chicago is not a big deal because Michigan and Chicago are pretty much, academic peers, although UC might have an edge.

UConn... yeah it was a pretty weak admissions season.

My bad, I thought chibears had been accepted to MIT and Harvard; didn't notice the WL. That makes me lose all respect I ever had for chibears; jk. I totally agree that there's nothing big about turning down Chicago and UI. But, Harvard and MIT would've been.
BTW, I was rejected at both Harvard and MIT.

Maguo, I have known several students at Michigan who turned down Harvard, MIT, Princeton or Yale to attend Michigan, and they had no financial reason to do so. They got some merit money from Michigan, but they came from such wealthy families, that spending $200,000 on an education would have been inconsequential. They chose Michigan because they wanted a balanced experience and they felt that Harvard, Princeton, MIT or Yale wouldn't provide them with that balance. I have met far fewer who picked Michigan over Stanford...only 2 that I can remember. I think it's because Stanford, like Michigan, offers a great academic balance.

Yes, sonar, I applied for Keeler and was accepted in like February or something. I think we already discussed that, but maybe you forgot. I was originally offered $0 by Michigan, but I've since gotten two scholarships from the university. I guess my harvard and MIT waitlist status is spat upon, but for what it's worth I had turned them down in my heart even before hearing i was put on the waitlist. I promptly asked to be taken off both, so maguo probably still thinks I'm crazy. Dude, they just wouldn't have been as fun for me. To be honest, academics is my second criterion when looking for a college. Quality of life and general prospects of happiness came first for me (and i think they should for everyone else too).

I totally understand. I was just kind of joking.
Locally however, I get so much crap for turning down Duke and Johns Hopkins for UM, though I'm very happy with my decision.

Don't worry Maguo, in educated and professional circles, Michigan is at least as highly respected as Duke and JHU.

I know, but my friends don't. I usually just tell them I picked UM for football.
Well, I graduate in four hours!!!!

I think you said you got a Hunter and you planned to apply for a Keeler. Do you know when they notify Keeler applicants? I ask, because I applied, too.

Yes.

"Hunter" should read "Huntington."

Turned down UW honors, and even though Penn rejected me I would have taken Mich over it in a heartbeat.

Really UMich over Penn, why so?

Michigan over Penn isn't uncommon. I help UAE students who are Michigan-bound with their move to the US. In the last two years, 4 students from the UAE were admitted into both Michigan and Penn. 2 chose Michigan and 2 chose Penn. I personally chose Michigan over Penn many years ago. Those two universities are very similar in terms of overall academic quality and reputation. Some students will chose Michigan over Penn because the campus is more lively, the area around the campus is safer and the town is more collegiate. Others will chose Penn over Michigan because they want to stay in the East Coast, they like bigger cities and they really want the Ivy League association. You cannot go wrong with either school.

Awesome, this is helping me put things in perspective

Alexandre, do most of the kids from UAE goto American schools?

Not at all. I'd say only 15% or so go to the US. Just as many go to Canada or the UK, many stay in the UAE or go to Australia. Furthermore, the French usually return to France, the Lebanese usually return to Lebanon, the Egyptians and Indians also often reutrn to their home countries.

Did anyone turn down UCLA for UM? Would like to know... =X
