Hi! I was wondering, for the MT Young Arts audition, should I do a classical or contemporary monologue? I already know and have prepared both and really don't have a definite preference. They're both a minute in length too so the timing doesn't really affect my choice either. lol Any advice? What do most successful Young Arts MT applicants do in their audition?

Sassystage, my son is submitting something as well. We were thinking that the style of his monologue should contrast with the style of his song. If one is serious and somber, then make the other light and funny.

I don’t know if this is actually good advice or not - but I thought it might help to show range.

On YouTube you can find some past YoungArts winners and see what some of them have done.

I couldn’t find these on YouTube - how did you locate them?

In YouTube, in the search area, I typed in YoungArts and several suggestions popped up.

youngarts 2011

brings back several audition videos, as does:

Performances start at about 10:00

As I recall, all of the monologues I saw performed in Miami last year were contemporary, but D says that many kids (both MT and straight theatre) arrived with both classical and contemporary, so she’s not sure which one folks had used on thier audition tapes.

She thinks the most important thing is that it be age and type appropriate, have an interesting arc, and contrasts with your song.

Remember that express shipping is expensive :p, have fun making your tapes and good luck to all!!

Btw, to search YouTube be sure to enter " YoungArts" as one word.
