Young Scholars Program

Hi! I'm interested in the Young Scholars Summer Program at UMCP this summer! I was just wondering if its competitive, and if any of you have done it, how was the experience?

I want to do the Engineering course. Is it hard, and what do you reccomend?

Thanks!!

YSP alum here (2009 and 2010)

The engineering course isn’t really difficult and neither is admissions. It is a load of fun. And helps get some credits.

I am curious. Does this help in any way with admissions or obtaining scholarships? Or is this just plainly a good summer experience?

It may possibly help with admissions, as it shows your interest, but don’t count on it being a decisive factor. And I very highly doubt it will help with scholarships. However, on that note, it is definitely a good summer experience. It opens up your eyes to a college academic environment (and experiencing living on campus if you select that option, but it is about ~$1000 more expensive I think).

I did YSP a couple of years ago. I took the Materials Science and Engineering class, and it actually convinced me to major in MSE. I’m not sure if it helped with admissions, but it definitely helped me get an internship at NASA last summer.
