YoungArts 2013?

I just submitted my application with the payment, waiting for an email with my ID number to start submitting my work. It's been all day, how long does that usually take?

I'll be submitting in visual arts. Anyone else submitting? Thoughts/concerns/ etc?

I’m submitting, but only because you told me about it. Thanks! I’m submitting in Cinematic Arts and also Writing. It seems to be a big deal if you win.

Right? Seems like a great opportunity. I’m submitting in visual arts. Good luck!

Sweet! Seems awesome. Submitting spoken theatre and photography!

Good luck to both of you! I can’t enter for another 2 years.

Hi, I’m wondering if anyone can tell me whether high school Juniors are eligible for YoungArts Finalist awards, or only the honorable mention/merit awards? Thanks!

You’re eligible for the Finalist awards but not for nomination for the Presidential Scholar in the Arts, although your name will be submitted in the nomination process for next year’s cycle-when you’re a senior and eligible- if you are a finalist.

Did anyone get an email confirming their submission?

I did, a few minutes after submitting (although submitting was confusing, the interface was weird and the button kept disappearing? I wasn’t sure if it had worked but they sent me this:

“Your submission materials have been uploaded successfully. A notification letter with your adjudication results will be sent to you by mid December 2012. Best of luck from all of us at YoungArts.”

Students are receiving phone calls about the selections for 2013 and twitter is active

I’m a finalist! Thank you so much @volstrekt for telling me about this opportunity!

congrats!!! finalist in which category??? … and when did they call. I know that HM and Merit alway get announce near Thanksgiving

Nope, my sibling was HM last year and he got call from YA like way into December.

My S is a finalist (voice) and the deadline for replying back to them to confirm was yesterday. So maybe they will start announcing the HM and merit soon. Btw, they say they received over 10,000 applications this year!

Have they announced Writing finalists yet?

Yes, all the finalists have been notified. I believe that they will start notifying HM and merit after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Oh darn…I was holding out hope that my D (soprano) might be called. There is a FB page for 2012-13 finalists that appears to have quite a few openings, but perhaps they just haven’t added them yet. Congratulations to everyone who is a finalist-it was a tough year when they opened it up to 15-18 year olds…but think of the revenue (application fees) that it created for YA. Not a bad move on their part at all. The good news is that, assuming that they keep it open again for 15-18 year olds, my D will have another chance next year, and in the world of voice, that’s a lot of change! Then again, having to go through 10,000 applicants, they might be inspired to go back to Plan A…LOL!

Yeah I agree with Promusician I don’t think they have announce all the finalist yet…I call on Tuesday and they said they where still announcing finalist. There is still hope :D

I don’t know what the status is, but they could very well have contacted all of the finalists at this point. Here is what I do know, after 30 years as a professional musician, being on both sides of auditions/competitions:

Winning a competition/audition will not necessarily make or break you.

Most judges can get a good, general idea of a candidate within a few minutes, at times, even less. If they’re interested, they’ll hear more, if they’re not, they’ll excuse the candidate. Fair or not, it’s the way it is, especially with over 10,000 applicants.

Sometimes there are clear, distinct winners and other years there are so many talented candidates applying that making a decision is the most confusing process of splitting hairs when determining the final winners. Frequently, judges end up feeling bad that they couldn’t award more awards to the talented people who didn’t end up with the prize/job.

A panel of highly qualified judges often will hear things very differently, and value certain qualities above others. There can be a lot of disagreement within the committee when viewing/hearing the same video or live audition.

Another set of judges hearing the same auditions could very well end up with a completely different list of Finalists.

All YA candidates who make the Finals, HM and Merit list are absolute winners in my book!

Keep working, dreaming and trying. No one ever got anywhere by sitting back and watching things pass by.

And finally, I’m not going to preach about patience, because I’m working on that myself…and failing. ; )

You are so right! I know if you place in Photography or Visual arts in YoungArts a good majority of Art schools do reward nice Scholarships to winners. I know a girl who got 60K in Scholarship moneys for a art college for being a Merit winner last year!

YoungArts Judgment day is next week!!! A GREAT Majority of the winners should be notified.
