@winterbi @VahnGizel Thank you! I was thinking about doing the Congressional Art Competition this year, but I’m not sure if I can take one of the pieces away from my AP Drawing portfolio exam because if you get selected you have to give up your artwork for a year for display, correct? And nah, I’m only 15 :P

Any other classical voice applicants on this thread? What pieces did you audition with and what voice type? Best of luck to everyone…the suspense is driving me crazy!

Anyone get called today?

Not yet . . . I’m hoping that some calls are made today . . .

I found this really extensive and helpful list of writing competitions: <a href=“Young Writers Guide to Publications - NewPages.com”>Young Writers Guide to Publications - NewPages.com;

Out of curiosity, what did you guys write about in your Short Story and Creative Non-Fiction pieces? My Short Story featured a Venezuelan American family reflecting on terrorism and US countermeasures. My Creative Non Fiction depicted the last time I stole and why I don’t do that anymore.

Oh–and Poetry!

@CeruleanShadow For my creative non-fiction, for my first personal essay I wrote about sexuality and mental health issues–mostly how I came into terms with it through the irony of a friendship–and for my second, I wrote really brief creative essay about a boy in kindergarten with severe anxiety, anger, and mental health issues from my childhood. However, for my short stories, I wrote an experimental piece about a young boy who caught his uncle having sex with a young man and his reflection on loss of innocence, and joy that he had seen it (I’m not sure how keen YA is on experimental writing, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try!) For my second short story submission, it was also something character driven about a thirtysomething-man who slept with an artist while he was younger, his own struggle to comprehend his own human condition after he was invited to see his lover’s exhibition after years of not talking, where he’s manipulated by his lover’s painting that hung on the wall.

Arghh, I hope it’ll be enough… I’m just panicky that there might be little mistakes in all of them. :-S

@OverInfinity The AP Drawing exam has you send in your top 3 pieces and they keep it for a few months. I got mine back in August and submitted them in April.

Does anyone know how many applicants there were this year and how many from different categories?

@britatos I know! It’s the little things that worry me. Punctuating dialogue drives me crazy, and I know there’ll be some errors in that area. Btw Thanks for sharing I hope we go far in this competition.

@Mezzontherise. my D entered in the voice (classical) category. she’s a 16 year old junior in NYC. D is a soprano.
she preformed pieces by: Schubert-Der Jungling an der Quelle, Hageman -Do Not Go My Love,Gluck- title escapes me sorry! and Sondheim- the Steps of The Palace.

@CerculeanShadow Ugh, yes–I think for me it’s keeping my tenses correctly. For one of my submissions, I noticed I made one tensing slip-up–it wasn’t a huge one, and could’ve easily been read over-- but the idea that judges could hold that little error against you is horrifying. Good luck, though!

@coloraturakid you’re lucky to have known of the competition sooner! I didn’t find out about it until this year, and I’m a senior. I’m from Michigan, so I’m not by any of the regional areas. All great pieces she chose! I’m a mezzo, and I sang Dido’s Lament (Purcell-Dido and Aenes), Sure on the Shining Night (Purcell), Ici-bas (Faure), and Per la Gloria d’adorarvi (Bononcini). I’m not sure I’ll be invited as a finalist since my tapes weren’t the best, but I’m hoping to get an Honorable Mention or Merit. We’ll see! Best of luck to you.

Wonderful, beautiful choices @Mezzontherise ( I love your screen name!) I am crossing my fingers for you. I don’t think they consider where you are from AT ALL when it comes to the finalist portion…that’s why you cannot ‘slate’ that information in your videos. I think they may consider who they invite for the regionals. but that’s just me speculating.
My D’s videos were just shot in a rehearsal studio at The National Opera center on an iPhone. They are not great recordings.
My D goes to a well known performing arts high school in manhattan and honestly the only students who do YA seem to be seniors. I was a bit proactive and asked her if she wanted to enter. She knew of YA via some musical theater friends and said, ‘Why not!’ I don’t think she’s expecting to be a finalist at all. It’s so competitive and the sheer volume of applications is a bit disconcerting, but the arts are all about putting yourself out there. For VP students auditions, competitions, pre screens, etc. are all par for the course. Plus she’s a soprano…and well there are zillions…so you have to be prepared to not be chosen & often. Saying that she’s had many successes and excellent feedback…so it keeps you going.
Are you applying to conservatory VP programs? I’m curious to here what you are looking at for college, if you don’t mind!
ALL GOOD LUCK TO YOU!

@coloraturakid thank you for your positive feedback! Definitely smart to be proactive–you and your D will be more familiar with the process for next year. I’m applying to University of Michigan, Eastman, DePaul, DePauw, and Western Michigan for VP. I was going to apply to CCM, but after visiting crossed it off my list. I was not impressed by the vibe I got (pretentious, “I’m better than you are” attitude, just overall unkind). I know I’m entering into a tough business, but there’s no need to go to a university or conservatory that builds you down instead of up—that’s just not a healthy environment to learn and grow under. I am extremely impressed with U of M, and it’s my top choice at the moment.

i don’t think they’ll make calls today, it is sunday after all… i don’t think they work on sunday…

im just gonna assume they’ll start making calls in 10 years

@RunningForLife sounds about right :((

Maybe this Thursday-Friday?
