So, the application deadline was yesterday.

Is the rumor-mill active about when they'll start notifying the winners? I know that, last year, most people received their packets before Thanksgiving.

(I applied in Writing, Short Story. I'm not expecting much, as from what I've seen, most writing Finalists attend fine arts/private schools with specialized programs. They're also insanely talented.)

Last year, my S received a phone call on Nov 11. So, hopefully, you will hear in early/mid November. Best of luck, S said it was an “awesome, life changing” experience.

I applied as well in Photography. I’m so anxious out of my mind. I really want to be selected as a finalist but I don’t think I’m good enough. I’m trying to stay positive.
Ps one of my friends auditioned for dance.

I have many friends who also applied in Writing, and friends who are YoungArts alumni in Writing; we’re all waiting to see who gets the calls. The thing about YA is that the judging is pretty fair, so there really aren’t any surprises. Best of luck to you and your friend, Ornellekim.

Thanks to megpmom and momcinco for your replies! Early-mid November is what I’ve been hearing from several different sources.

Winners are notified first, then the next levels-Merit and Honorable Mention-and finally, those who don’t receive anything are notified last. Finalists were all over the social media (establishing pages on FB, tweeting, etc. and who can blame them, it’s exciting!) while others hadn’t heard anything, and were finally contacted anywhere from 3-4 weeks later. It is what it is…a competition that’s great if you win, and doesn’t necessarily mean a thing if you don’t. I know of several mega-talented YA applicants who weren’t chosen for anything who consistently placed ahead of HM and Merit winners in other competitions the same year, and who are now studying at some of the top music programs in the country. Keep in mind, competitions are subjective, and the road to a professional career is a long one. It’s way too early in the game to know who will eventually “make it”. Good luck to all!!!

I read on the apply page (on the Acceptd website) that people invited to YoungArts Week would be notified on November 3rd, but they took that date off of the page when the application deadline passed, so I don’t know if it’s still true.

Btw: Don’t freak out if you hear that some kids are getting phone calls and you haven’t heard anything. Each category notifies their finalists on different days. So, while a voice finalist might get a call early in November, a film finalist might not get a call for another week or so.

I applied for Writing, too (Novel)! Whether or not I get anything, I’m pleased with what I submitted, and I appreciated the whole process. Of course, it’d be great to be a Finalist, and I’m holding out hope. Good luck to everyone!

@Shamagirl: I can’t give you any stats, unfortunately, but from what I’ve heard from past winners, there haven’t yet been any Novel Finalists. Best of luck to you, though. Maybe you’ll break the streak. :)

@megpmom: Thank you, again, for your advice! We all appreciate the calming wisdom of those with past experience.

@ForeverFish: Really? Oh dear…I saw a blog post from one person who was a Novel Finalist, but I guess she’s a rare case! As a fellow writer, I’m just curious: what were your stories about, if you don’t mind sharing?

@megpmom: Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us jittery newbies! :)

Hey guys! This is the first time I’ve participated and I applied for short story. I submitted 2 pieces out of the possible 3. I was just wondering if you guys knew whether or not the judges look at each piece individually to determine the award or the portfolio as a whole. Also, is it a problem that I only submitted 2 pieces instead of 3? Sorry for all of the questions and thanks in advance!:)

@ArtsyGal88: Hello! It’s my first time, too! I didn’t submit for Short Story, so I don’t know for sure, but I looked at the guidelines and they say “UP TO, but not more than, three (3) stories.” So I think you’re fine! Good luck!
