I just called YA as my daughter got a letter from Columbia U congratulating her on her recognition at YA…but we haven’t heard anything…so congratulations for what she thought?
So YA said that is because they get a list of all who apply. They are still in the process of sending out Merit and Honorable Mentions and will all be out by second week in December.

Never mind. I just received confirmation that I’m on the YANY wait list.

My DD received a large envelope telling her she made honorable mention in musical theatre. Her best friend is a finalist in musical theatre. Have fun to all who are going to the regionals!

@Leela368: WHAT! They’re still sending out HM and Merit notification!

@Dradsmom: When did you get the envelope, today or last week?

looks as if I might still have a chance with the 3 other disciplines that I applied for.

Early last week.

Hi guys!

I’m also entered as a writer. So what’s the concensus? Have all the awards been sent out?

Also, Leela368, I have not received an email. It’s really weird that they said that! Maybe tomorrow…

Best of luck to everyone here! (With this competition and future ones.) :)

@ForeverFish: Can you try to apply other regions as well?
I am wondering how many spots YA provides for each region.

My D applied for the spoken theatre so maybe that’s why Columbia send the email as it is a different program. YA said schools only contact those that check the box on the YA application saying that colleges can have access to your audition and results.

Leela368, my student received a generic email from The Art Institute of Chicago about 4-5 days ago and assumed it was part of a mass mailing to all participants and because most posters here seemed to be saying all award winners had been notified, the student assumed all was over. However, when the student also received the Columbia email to those “recognized” by YA, we took a look on CC and saw your post. The student entered poetry and is in the midwest. It seems odd that YA would still have awards to participants that have not yet been notified. When you called did YA by chance say why this would be so drawn out?

@cherryli2015: I’m not sure what you mean by other region. Are you asking me if I applied to more than one discipline? If so, the answer is no – but there are other people on this thread who have.

I think the number of winners in each of the 10 disciplines is roughly proportional to the number of applicants. Last year they recognized 127 writers, which made Writing the second-largest category behind Voice (138 winners).

@Tspwt5: I think that all winners have been notified, as the deadline to RSVP for regional programs is today. At the very least, winners’ emails should have been sent already, and those can all be sent at one time.

@Tspwt5 I received a nice green packet in the mail from SAIC inviting me to apply. They had to get my new address from YoungArts, because since then I have moved.

@ForeverFish I am not talking about discipline. What I mean is that, can you also apply LA region besides NY region?

I think you RSVP NY region pretty earlier. Why are you still in wait list?

@cherryli2015: Winners are only allowed to attend one regional program. I think everyone who RSVP’s is placed on the wait list in first-come, first-serve order. Since I confirmed my interest in YANY the same night that the email was sent, I’m fairly sure that I’ll have a spot.

But does it mean they won or do they contact all the applicants that check the box?

I’m talking about the Columbia University email.

They have a winners list, which they share with colleges. Thus you have to win to get on the winners list.

^It was my understanding that the winners’ list isn’t released until the beginning of December. However, it appears that I also received a congratulatory email from Columbia a few days ago. Apparently, they got my name directly from YA.

Here’s the opening paragraph of the email:

Columbia University in the City of New York received your name from the National YoungArts Foundation. Congratulations on your recognition by this renowned organization. In recent years, several YoungArts participants have been admitted to Columbia and are now undergraduate students here. We invite you to consider Columbia as you explore your college options.

My son got an email from Columbia, but has NOT heard anything from Youngarts. He applied for Jazz.

Just reading through this entire thread is SO fascinating. YA says this, YA says that, this contradicts that, the other contradicts this . . . why is it that no one seems to have the real story one way or another? To a total outsider, it seems to me that YA wants to keep everyone in the dark as long as possible. Interesting decision.

Okay, just contacted Young Arts and they said they are still notifying Honorable Mention and Merit, but that the Columbia email means nothing and was just a poor choice of words on Columbia’s part.
