@ArtsyGal88: I just saw the second part of your original question, hahaha. I believe the judges evaluate every portfolio on a holistic basis (as in they consider all of the pieces you send in).

Yo guys,
Wondering if anyone entered into writing with a script? It seems like I’m the only one I know of so far. Also did the majority of you enter with multiple excerpts? I preferred to enter a short screenplay of 20 pages.

I entered for Novel Writing, but I submitted two excerpts that were good in juxtaposition. That’s just me, though. Good luck! :)

@Shamagirl: Sorry, I just saw your post about my short stories earlier today. The first was about two brothers living in the shadow of an alcoholic father and the second (extremely short) was a series of vignettes about a young man’s death. :)

@Script Crow: I entered script too! It’s one of the less popular categories, and there normally are only 0-3 finalists in it, but it’s worth a shot. I entered with two 10-minute plays.

Oh thanks so much for the response! How do u feel about your submission?? And what genre did you follow?

@emeraldEvi

@ScriptCrow I’m happy with my two scripts, but YA is so competitive that I’m not getting my hopes up. One is a one-act comedy and the other is a little more serious duet scene.

@ForeverFish: That sounds amazing. Hey, my excerpt is about a nah dying, too! xD

*Man…sorry , I blame my phone!

So, are finalists getting called tomorrow? Nov 3rd?

From what I understand, it depends on the discipline. There’s just no way that YA will be able to call 100+ people in one day. I think the writing finalists will be notified sometime next week, though (per other applicants who know the process much better than I do).

Are they really?? I’m so ready for tomorrow! Btw anyone interested in another competition like youngarts? Same categories? It’s called On Your Way as part of Arts Schools Network

Honestly, I don’t think people will be notified by tomorrow, probably a week later.

Yeah, same…if finalists were called tomorrow it would be an extremely fast turnaround time to judge all the work - 2 weeks exactly. I think last year the winners were notified around the 11th and the deadline was the same, so it’s pretty safe to say calls will start on the 9th maybe? Not this Sunday but next Sunday…on twitter they said people would know in early to mid November which makes the week of November 9th sound about right

I can’t wait to find out about the results! The next few weeks will be nerve wrecking.

Last year I applied to the Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards. I obviously wanted to win Gold Portfolio but I had one week to put it together, wouldn’t be able to see my teachers in weeks if she wouldn’t sign my applications, and overconfidence made me not take it seriously. I only won regionals (3 Silver and 2 Honorable Mentions). When I realized that I had one more chance to enter an art competition, I worked my butt off! I sent 3 film scripts. I’m proud of them because I educated myself a lot in screenwriting. Even wrote a crime thriller.

Hopefully, some of us will be finalist!

CC usually has a few finalists each year. Twitter is also a good place to check for news. I have heard that calls are starting next week; my writer friends are expecting to be notified on/before the 11th.

Finalist or not, YoungArts tweeted that we’ll all know of our standing by mid-November. At most, it should be two more weeks (and I think we’re getting both email and snail-mail results).

For clarification, last year’s deadline was 10/19 and some people had already been notified by 11/11. Mid- to late-next week would be my guess as to when calls start coming in. Good luck to you all. :)

@ForeverFish
Thank you so much for the information!

People on twitter are posting that they’re finalist

Yeah, I’ve seen the tweets, too! Congrats everyone!
