I didn’t see that anyone started a thread, but if I’m copying someone, just let me know…
YoungArts 2016 app. cycle starts today!!! I’ve never applied before. I’m going for Writing, but doubt I’m good enough…
I’ve never applied before, either, and I also am applying for Writing, probably Creative Non-Fiction! What category in Writing are you applying for?
I think I might apply for poetry! I love prose, but I can never actually finish a short story, so that’s probably not the best idea…
I’m going for voice (classical)! I’ve never done it before and I don’t have much hope considering a very small few get selected but hey- it’s always good to try!
They only allow four poems to be submitted for the application What exactly qualifies as a poem? Would a collection (as in, they’re all linked) of three short poems count as three poems or one?
@topaz1116 I’m pretty sure a collection of poems would count as three poems. The application requirement says separate poems, so they can’t be linked even if you want them to.
The deadline is October 16, 2015. Right now, it seems as though there’s a lot of time between now and then (five months!), but I’m going to be scrambling to finish up my application with only 15 days left. I just know it.
Ugh. Then I don’t think it would be wise to submit four-line poems. As of now, I only have one poem I think I’m going to submit… Although I might find more if I look through my folder.
People are starting to think about YA apps already?! Applying again this year for flute, hopefully I’ll make it to Miami this time (regional winner last time). Good luck, everyone!
@glasshours I play the flute too! I’m applying for piano though
Since I’m an old timer, I’ll probably have to apply a month ahead of the deadline because I won’t have regular access to a good piano at my college
@photogeek8 I’m applying for Creative Nonfiction, too! And short story but I have more hope in CN…
I can’t write poetry so that was NOT gonna happen :D/
I applied for acting and playwriting last year, but it really stung when I was rejected, so idk if I want to apply again this year (plus, I put a ton of time into the application). Anyone have any recommendations?
This is interesting, I’ve never heard of this! Perhaps I will apply Thanks for informing me about this program.
I’m writing a new poem about the Holocaust that is going to be far longer than any of my other poems, but it is more emotional than lyrical, since it actually has a story; I wonder if I should include it when I apply.
I’m probably just going to ask my next year’s English teacher which poems I should submit, though.
@16elir Ooooo,you got that- playwriting and acting…
I’m a personal people person (so I can and might possibly tell you a whooolleeee lot about this one experience even if I’ve known you for five minutes… if you’re not rude :D) so I decided with Creative-Nonfiction with a focus in personal essays/memoirs. Short Story is closer to playwriting if you want to do it like that, though, if that helps.
@topaz1116 I’m going to do the same thing… or more like ask them to check grammar mistakes…
I’m going for finalist :O, though I’d be lucky to even get a rejection letter…
I apologize for my ignorance…but I’ve never heard about this competition. Is it comparable to Scholastic? Just want your 2cents.
@tau628 - Hi! I’d say that YoungArts is definitely comparable to Scholastic; although Scholastic is generally more well-known, YoungArts is more competitive and prestigious (at least for finalist status, anyway). You get to travel to Miami if you’re chosen as a finalist and compete for $10,000, which is REALLY difficult considering that there are only 15-25 people chosen for any particular discipline.
I’d definitely recommend entering; even if you end up not making it to Miami, regional programs are awesome, too.
Hey, has anyone applied yet?
Nah, I want to run my stuff by my English teacher once school starts. I have no idea which poems I’m going to submit (cries why only three?).
