YoungArts 2018

I’m going to the New York regional! got the email about forty minutes ago! so excited!

Yay!! My D got into NY as well!

wait i’m so confused if you got the email does that mean you got accepted lol
Also like i got 2 emails from miami and LA and i didn’t even sign up for miami??

I think that was a mistake. We have friends in LA who got both emails but are signed up for just LA

They said there was no space for me :frowning:

it’s not the end of the world, I can still put YA on college apps

I understand your disappointment. That’ how my D felt last year so I was very happy she got in this year. If you can audition again next year and you win be sure to send the email request back within minutes of receipt for a regional spot. The time stamp is also considered when getting a spot. And having YA on college apps is great!

For those of you going to NY, how fast did you reply? My D got her award email at 1:25 on 11/29 and had a time stamp on her request 8 minutes later (1:33 on 11/29). She still didn’t get in. I thought 8 minutes was a pretty fast response given the email came in the middle of the school day when she was in class. We have no previous experience with YoungArts so we really don’t know how any of this works. Has anyone every heard of someone getting a space later after they initially were told the program is full?

@Adv123 I feel your pain. Last year D responded 11 minutes after getting the email. She didn’t get in. It was different last year since local kids were given priority. I think they may still be to an extent. I think discipline matters too. Depending on how many spots are available in each discipline. D responded in 6 minutes and was in school too but we knew that time would be critical. I was still worried that 6 minutes was 3 minutes too late but she was lucky. Also yes there are kids that are waitlisted that may still get in. Did she get a waitlist notification?

My D is in the Theater discipline and this was her first time applying. This is what she received this morning:

We regret to inform you that the YoungArts regional programs are at max capacity at this time. However, we will continue to cultivate each of the programs throughout December and will finalize them by the end of the month. Should space become available in your discipline/category at any point, we will reach out to you immediately with next steps to register.

I’m not sure what they mean by “cultivate each program.” It seems like a fairer way to do this would be to select by lottery or something. Assigning spaces based on response time to an email you don’t even know is coming strikes me as a less than equitable way to distribute such an important opportunity. I have a feeling that a lot of kids felt an intense high last week and a rock bottom low this week, which unfortunately diminishes the whole experience. Not saying anything you don’t already know/haven’t already experienced, I know! Thanks for responding to my questions!

Boy do I ever know. Last year we felt exactly as you are feeling now. Don’t let it diminish her accomplishment! It’s a huge one not to be taken lightly. It’s a wonderful resume builder for college as well. We have until Dec 20 to fill out forms and register. I’d assume if there are kids that don’t get them filled out in time etc your D may get a spot. Last year I know kids got late spots. Just not my D. That’s why this year I made sure she was ready for that email to respond as soon as she got it. We didn’t expect it to come during school and some emails came to me and some to her so we didn’t know where or when they would come and to whom. It was crazy. Theater I believe may be one of the biggest disciplines and most competitive. Like voice for my D. Hoping she ends up getting a spot but if not I hope she tries again next year. Good luck and congratulations!

Thanks, SpartanDrew! Your insight was very helpful. Congratulations to your daughter and I hope she has an amazing time in NY!

@Adv123 Huh, I’m going to New York and I think I responded after about 20 minutes because I was at a lunch event for school. I think I read on a separate YA thread that regionals is determined in part by time stamp and also in part by proximity to the regionals location? I wouldn’t quote myself on that, but I can definitely double check for ya.

If it helps, I’m from upstate New York. :\ Hope some spots open up!!

It was determined by 3 things: PLace of Residence, number of spots in each discipline, and time stamp of email response. Last year time stamp was everything if you were on the waitlist. They called it a “local regional” or something like that meaning kids local to the city where the regional took place automatically got an invitation to go. This year to make it more fair for kids living further away, like us, everyone had the same chance to get in, depending on discipline. Voice and Theater I think are the 2 most difficult to get in because of the high numbers but I could be wrong. @Adv123 I think you should email YA and ask them how it was determined so your D has a better shot for next year. We literally sat by email waiting for results so if my D had won again she could immediately respond to that email.

For those reading this thread about YA, the important thing right now is the development that happens during the next 4 years of college or conservatory coming up (or grad for those on that level) so don’t be discouraged if you didn’t get in to YA.

What compmom said is 100% accurate! This is one competition with a subjective set of ears/eyes. I know of some exceptionally talented kids who didn’t get in and I am flabbergasted by it truthfully. I am absolutely certain it won’t have any effect on how successful they will be in their career. I have had many people tell me recently how much they feel my D has grown over the past 6 months as a performer. It makes me really excited to see her growth over the coming years in college. That’s ultimately the main goal at this point for her.
