Youngarts 2019-2020

Hey, everyone! Since entries open June 4th, I thought now would be a good time to start a thread for Youngarts. What categories are you all thinking of entering in? I want to try photography, CNF, short story, novel writing, film, or poetry again. I think I qualify for fee waivers so it wouldn’t be such a big deal if I enter in three or four categories.

@wistfulwords it’s so cool that you’re trying photography and film. i would looove to be an artist in addition to being a writer, but i don’t have an artistic bone in my body unfortunately. I’m going to apply for creative non-fiction and poetry. As a rising senior, this is going to be both the first and last time I’m entering. i’m definitely not expecting anything, but it can’t hurt to try

Thanks for starting this group chat but after last year my hope in making it is slim to none. I’ll probably submit to the short story category again. I may even send in two short story submissions.

@Lunarlitgend you’re allowed to submit multiple times to one category?

It’s so awesome to see some of the same people from last year submitting again! I personally will probably only submit poetry, but I’m still contemplating entering the creative nonfiction category.

@beautifulchaos Yeah! Absolutely! That’s definitely been done before :joy:

@Pentatonix123 You too!! :smiley:

Hi guys! I was a stalker on last year’s thread so this is new…actively participating. I’m definitely submitting as a writer again in a few categories depending on what I get around to polishing up this summer, and I’m really excited! Just applying last year and seeing what writing they’ve taken in the past taught me so much, so I’m hoping for better results this time around.

I’ve been eyeing YoungArts for a while now but never actually worked up the courage to submit. Does YoungArts have its own specific “aesthetic”? Subject matter that it’d favor over others?

Applications are open!

Wow…only two short stories, this is really scary.

I’m probably going to go for Short Story, but I might branch out and try some other categories–who knows?

Did anyone else get an email from youngarts inviting them to submit again due to their entires/wins last year?

@Lunarlitgend So I e-mailed YoungArts… and they said that we’re not allowed to submit more than one entry in a single category (e.g. if you’re a prose writer, you can submit only 1 entry for short story.)

(Ughh, bad news for me as a poet…why does poetry have to be sooo subjective).

:frowning:

I was wondering the same thing as @winterbourne
And also, how does the YoungArts aesthetic compare to Scholastic?

@writer333 I’m hesitant to say exactly what their aesthetics may be, but I think the best way to decide for yourself is to watch the finalist videos of YoungArts on YouTube or to look at the Scholastic winning submissions on their online gallery. I do feel that Scholastic tends to like pieces about one’s cultural background, but I feel it is harder to pinpoint YoungArt’s.

Hello, I’m new to C.C. but I’m so glad I finally found a place to discuss YoungArts. I’ve been looking to apply since last year but I realized the deadline had passed already. This time I’m submitting an application for Visual Arts, and (possibly maybe?) Writing. Both seem highly competitive, the former of which I have found scarce advice on. Do you guys know anyone that applied or is planning on applying to Visual Arts?

Hey guys, I’m going to submit to YoungArts next year for the poetry, short story, and creative nonfiction categories. I’ve won a national award for Scholastic before, but I don’t feel prepared at all to submit to YoungArts because it seems way harder. I was wondering, does anyone have any past submissions they would be willing to share, or any tips?

Hey! I’m thinking of submitting to film and theatre (spoken)!

Hey y’all! Has anyone checked the Young Arts FAQ on their website? It looks like they’re being more clear about notifications this year. I’m also a little bemused by the notification status one (it says winners will be notified via email (only)—are they not calling finalists this year?). Also, the feedback program sounds interesting… What’re you guys’ thoughts?

@FlameAlchemist Wow! I just read it and I actually really LOVE that! I’m so glad YoungArts is providing us with this kind of opportunity
As for the notifications, I assume so? Honestly, I thought I would love the ideas of Finalists getting calls and what not but after last years experience, I really hated it. It was so unorganized and not only me but other participants unfocused in class. Whenever our phones started ringing we’d grab it instantly, hoping it was YoungArts but get disappointed when it’s not. It was like our emotions were being toyed with and it wasn’t a fun time. I think it’s better that they just give all winners alike an Email so that way it’s more organized and fair for everyone.
