Youngarts 2019-2020

@iamaninja02 keep in mind since it is the weekend that they probably won’t be calling people so don’t feel down!!

Does anyone know what day they will finish notifying finalists next week? Have creative nonfiction and novelist finalists been notified?

@writer333 I haven’t heard of any novelist finalists being notified, so I"m just crossing my fingers that I still have a chance haha

@writer333 I’m in the same boat. Are Creative Nonfiction people just super quiet or something?! Have you heard of any on social media?

Does anyone know how many visual arts finalists have posted? I cant seem to see any. We are entering the weekend and I’m losing hope!

either they’re notifying by discipline and photography/visual arts is last, or it’s alphabetical by last name and the photo/visual finalists are all asians

@onepiecefreak16 i have only heard of 2 finalists for visual arts, otherwise those winners just don’t publicize themselves
@lonepineman that generalization was unnecessary but one of your theories may be true

This is a disgusting comment @lonepineman

I’ve been keeping up with the posts over the past week or so and I just wanted to make a little spcheal about all the anxiety over YoungArts. I won in Design Arts last year as a high school senior, and I did feel similar anxiousness over the prospect of getting/not getting a finalist award. While I wasn’t lucky enough to be a finalist, I did get the opportunity to attend an amazing regional program where I met so many talented artists, musicians, performers, etc. YoungArts, as long as you win something (which I understand is still an exclusive standard in and of itself), treats its winners all the same during the regional program. No one is categorized by Honorable Mention or Merit or Finalist at all; in fact, the only document that lists such info is the winners sheet. The gallery coordinators and administration treat everyone with the same respect as winning artists, and many of the seniors I met who weren’t finalists ended up at amazing programs (Columbia Juilliard dual degree, Parsons/Lang dual degree, Rice’s Shepard school of music, Brown/RISD dual program, USC Roski, Yale, Wellesley). I think what’s most valuable about YoungArts is not so much the week itself (although it was very fun and memorable), but the alumni opportunities you get. The microgrant program is incredibly powerful, and the alumni exhibition opportunities garner you publicity and resume experience. I didn’t realize it at the time, but just getting YoungArts to recognize me in some manner was incredible. Youngarts gave me opportunities to meet unique artists who influenced my point of view and made me hungry to continue strengthening my artistic process.

I’m sure a lot of you on here, let’s be real, are very passionate about your art but also are pragmatists and see obtaining YoungArts finalist as essential to your college application process. I’ll say this: focus on just getting into YoungArts, not getting the finalist award. I know it’s hard to fathom this in the competitive spirit of the moment, but colleges take notice of YoungArts regardless of the level you got. And even if you don’t win this year, don’t be discouraged; keep on making art, applying elsewhere, and perhaps reapply if you can. If this is the last year you can apply (also applies to an extent if you are a senior in the college app process), focus on other relevant competitions/events/festivals (i.e. for visual artists/writers, Scholastic, Adroit, etc.). And YoungArts, while influential to colleges, will 1) not make a difference at art schools which always prioritize your own portfolio/audition (and besides, if you got YoungArts you probably have a good portfolio anyways) and can 2) only complement what you put in your application to normal universities. It is not an automatic ticket to success; it’s just one indicator of many possible ones of success. So please please don’t be discouraged, and good luck to everyone who’s applying.

@b8rn8rd i definitely agree with you on everything and if anyone worked just as hard as I have I’d completely understand the stress in these applications. @lonepineman I realize that you are going through a lot of stress please refrain from taking that out of another group of people. No one has any clue the process youngarts is going through to make these decisions. All I have seen is dancers on insta currently getting called. Nothing from visual arts or photography or design that I’ve seen off yet!! Stay hopeful people.

@anarthoe My medium was oil paint on canvas, and a bit of sewing on fabric haha

@remi01 @frogandtoad @anarthoe lol chill… I’m sure the comment was lighthearted. I know him in real life and he’s Asian as well. I’m Asian too and I don’t really see how it’s offensive lol.

@lonepineman I’m with you lol.
@b8rn8rd Thank you for your advice. This is a much needed perspective right now!

@inflorescent @osun001 Yeah, I haven’t heard anything about CNF or novel. Maybe notifications are going out next week? At least I hope so.

@writer333 I hope so too!

I know Instagram is not a reliable source but the only people that are getting picked are dancers and I believe they are actually going by category tbh. And if you read back into this cc forum then we do actually have a lot of winners in the writing category so idk. And for @lonepineman i apologize for taking your comment out of context. I’m in the same boot as you because I applied for visual arts. I’m both worried and confused lol I don’t understand why any artists have spoken about being accepted on social media.

Out of the visual/design/photo people who posted online, I can only find one, which is a pretty rad fashion designer named Ariel Swedroe.

i looked up ariel swedroe and in one of the articles on her (https://printerlink.sgia.org/communities/community-home/digestviewer/viewthread?MessageKey=d6e89a70-37cc-4276-9d0c-c752159392bc&CommunityKey=1fb05f1a-3171-45ef-b961-ba833504680b&tab=digestviewer) i found this: “The official [YoungArts] 2020 winners’ announcement and press release will be made on November 26, 2019.” i hope that official date helps ease some people’s minds; we’ve waited this long, so we can wait at least another week :')

Do we know any names for visual artist that were accepted!!

On Twitter someone said that they knew a few visual arts finalists but they hadnt posted online
