Congrats to all!
@longsx3 's DD’s accomplishments are especially amazing because she is quite young. She graduated HS in 3 years and is now graduating college in 3 years.
She has an amazing list of Law School acceptances, all with large merit awards.
My CS major son is going to be a rocket scientist for the summer! He’ll be interning with Lockheed Martin’s [Orion Spacecraft](Orion | Lockheed Martin) team.
Congrats!!!
What is the J. Hubert Scruggs Scholarship?
^ Where did you see this particular named scholarship mentioned? There is a William D. “Bill” Scruggs Memorial Endowed scholarship, available to incoming freshmen from Fort Payne HS in AL. J. Hubert Scruggs was president of the Concrete Engineering and Construction Company in the early 1900’s. Previous recipients of that scholarship have been studying medicine-related fields. I don’t see the latter one you are referring to in the alumni documents, however, so you must have seen it someplace else?
Regardless, usually this award will be 1 of 100s of small alumni scholarships which are apportioned by the scholarship selection committee to existing students (i.e., not freshmen). You usually do not apply for a specific ‘named’ scholarship (unless there are specific criteria associated with the scholarship, such as have to be a certain major or come from a certain place). You simply apply using the UA Scholarship application for Returning Students, and this is accessed via one’s mybama account. Good luck with your applications, and sincere congrats on your own University Fellows membership, @tenn2bama!
@aeromom, the stipend I am receiving is through the J. Hubert Scruggs Scholarship. Now that you mention the relation to recipients studying in the medicine fields, it makes sense being that I am pre-med majoring in biology. Thanks!
@tenn2bama you will probably be asked to write a thank-you letter to the family of this scholarship or to the donor(s). At that time you can ask for more information about this particular scholarship in order that your letter is as relevant and personable as you can make it.
Students, remember to continue to re-apply for scholarships each year. MANY students in HC don’t realise that they can/should do that! And, those students who did not originally receive one of these nice little ‘additional’ scholarships upon admission to UA forget that they, too, as returning students can try again for additional funds through the mybama scholarship link. It will show up there mid-fall semester. Deadline was Dec 1st one year (same date as incoming freshman scholarship app), but I believe it is now very early Spring (Feb or Mar).
My DD got into CBH! I’m very excited and super proud of her! I think it’s going to be a great experience.
Congrats! It is a wonderful program!!!
@LostTexan Congratulations to your daughter, wishing her the best!
I haven’t posted a brag for a while, so here’s an update on AeroSon.
AS is traveling to Huntsville today to accept a scholarship from the American Helicopter Society’s Redstone Chapter. Earlier this summer, he also received a scholarship from the AHS’ Vertical Flight Foundation program at their annual international conference (called Forum 72). AHS International is the world’s oldest and largest technical society dedicated to enhancing the understanding of vertical flight technology.
We are so very thankful for this financial assistance and academic recognition, as well as for the fantastic industry connections that result from these awards. Thanks, also, to UA professors for their assistance with AS’ applications and the research opportunities they extend to him. Any aero student/family out there interested in more info PM me, and I can then put you in touch with AS. Roll-pitch-yaw Tide.
Roll Tide, @aeromom!
Awesome!!! Congrats!!!
Bama Brag!
As many of you know, my Bama son (class of 2013) is a 4th year med student. Residency apps were processed on Oct 1st by ERAS. So far, he has 34 residency interviews AND several for tippy tippy tippy top residencies. He’ll be criss-crossing the country over the next few months.
So, for anyone who thinks that a premed needs to go to a “top undergrad” in order to get into a “good med school” so as to attract the attention of top residencies, that is soooo not true. S is attending a well-ranked med school, but it’s not a top ranked one.
Med schools care about high GPAs, strong MCAT scores, LORs and medically-related ECs.
Top residencies care about Step scores, how well the student did at his/her med school, research, LORs.
National Match Day is March 17, 2017 ~ fingers crossed for fabulous news!
Roll Tide, @mom2collegekids!
That’s incredible, @mom2collegekids ! He must be pleased, I am sure!
It’s been a long time since I have posted here. My D graduated in May with majors in Communicative Disorders and Psychology on a National Merit Scholarship. While at Bama, she did research, was a president of her sorority, played an intramural sport, and had an all-round great experience.
Speech Pathology grad schools are extremely competitive, accepting from 8-25%. She applied to 8 programs with a 4.0 and good GRE score. She was accepted at 5, (3 top 25) rejected at 2 and wait listed at 1. All acceptances came with financial aid or scholarships. She is doing great this first semester. She is President of her school’s chapter of the national speech and hearing association and still maintaining her GPA.
All this happened because I read a post from Mom2collegekids in 2009 about National Merit scholarships. Without that knowledge, D would have attended the local commuter school, with loans.
D’s loved UA so much she skype tutored hs junior cousin in RI for ACT and PSAT so he can afford OOS tuition. He got a 33. She’ll do the same with the younger cousins. She wants them to be a Bama family. Thanks M2CK and other CC’ers for sharing UA and financial aid info over the years.
Congrats and best wishes for @“Yankee Belle” 's DD. I remember when she started at Bama! Roll Tide!
Great news - DS was just offered an internship with Facebook for next summer!! He will be receiving his BS and MS in Computer Science in May, and then will be returning for his final year of STEM to MBA next year. This is his dream internship and I am so proud of him! Roll Tide!
