City I still need to visit: Barcelona
City I dream of living in: I’m pretty happy where I am, but I wouldn’t mind extended visits to lots of places. Maybe a few months in London? I’ve been there many times (though not recently), but never for more than a few weeks at a time.
Favorite city of all time: Los Angeles in the 1980s (loved the architecture, loved the scenery, loved the museums, loved the food and even secretly loved the car culture.)
London has great museums, some lovely parks, and lots of interesting architecture. The summer I was there supposedly working on my senior thesis on low-cost housing I played hooky with friends for a week going to the theater every day and sometimes twice a day going to matinees.
I like how easy it is to get around to the abundant London tourist attractions (museums/historical landmarks/etc). There are also lots of ‘easy to get to’ day trip destinations. The theater offerings are great. Language isn’t an issue.
Fwiw, we tend to fly into either London or Paris for our European vacations from O’Hare. Our familiarity with the cities plays into our enjoyment. We haven’t been bored yet…finding new things to explore each time. That’s because we tend to plan long-ish trips (3-4 weeks) and we like getting acclimated before heading to other, often new to us, European cities. We haven’t been bored at either location yet.
On my post I added that London was a city that surprised me. I wasn’t interested in going at all, until we were invited to go with friends. Without that invitation, we would never have planned to go there. Absolutely not on my bucket list. But I loved it, and would go back in a heartbeat.
London is a great city. Walkable, interesting, lots to do, great public transport.I’ve been multiple times and wouldn’t hesitate to go back. On the other hand I should have added Dublin to my list of overrated cities but Galway to the list of cities I like.
London has a lot going for it for a big city. Great and easy public transportation. It’s clean. Lots of trees and public parks. Very diverse. All kinds of people. Day trips are easily done by train. It’s my favorite city of top 50 most populous that I have been to, which admittedly is not very many. I like it better than NYC, San Francisco, LA, any American city.
