Your College Major: How did you make the choice?

Hi all,

Long time viewer, not much of a poster. I used CC two years ago when deciding to transfer from a community college to a state university. I have to say the choice went well. I am one course from graduating this summer with a degree in Mass Comms – Photojournalism and History.

Anywho.. I need your help, or just your opinions, whichever.

I am doing a radio project on the simple yet complex topic: The Major Choice. How do students decide on their college majors and careers.

So I’ll ask (I’ll have to know your real name and location, feel free to private message if you are not ok with posting personal information on the forum itself): What is your major? What process did you go through to decide on said major, or did you just want it? Do you think you’ll use your education to find a job related to your major? Feel free to answer any questions I didn’t ask, too.

I’ll start:
My real name is my forum name.
I’m from Minnesota.
As I mentioned before, I am a photojournalism and history major. I decided on this combination about a year ago when I realized I was very interested in history, but not really interested in history careers. I have always been comfortable with the camera, especially at sporting events, so it was a natural fit. I also very much like the idea of doing something a little different every day while giving voices to people who might not be able to speak.

I got into photography in high school (just like pretty much all photo majors) and realized that the only time I was relaxed during my transition between schools was when I had a camera in hand. While trying to turn “professional” has added a bit of pressure, I still love it.

I did not take any tests and wasn’t really pressured, much less told, by anyone what to do.

Now that I’ve shared, what’s your story?

Why do you need a real name?

Majored in chemical engineering.
Wanted to pursue engineering...decided on chemical engineering because I enjoyed chemistry.
I've had two jobs, both related to my major(s)...I also have an MBA.

Honestly, you are really right about not needing your name.

How is the use of an online forum going to be more credible with the use of someone's name half way across the country.

It's not.

If you don't want to post your real name, you don't have to.

Went off to college as a Chem or Physics major.
Tried Physics the first year and found it and the math challenging.
Decided to try Chem the second year, and decide in the spring.
Enrolled in an Archaeology class to fulfill a distribution requirement and because I'd always liked the subject.
Archaeology met at 9 am
Chemistry met at 10 am
By the time 10 came around that first Monday of the fall semester, I knew it was all over, but I went to Chemistry anyway.

Graduated as the only Archaeology major in my class to have passed Physics, Chemistry, and Calculus.

Which turned out to be a good thing when I decided I'd never make a living as a field archaeologist and went back to school for an M.S. in Soil Science. I went straight into upper level Chem courses while I picked up the Bio that I'd missed along the way.

And yes, I worked in Soil Science for a while, but now I teach English as a Second Language. Life is long and there are many surprises.

Have fun with your project. PM me if you need/want details.

I went to school as a PPE (Philosophy, Politics, Economics) major...I didn't do well in econ and got the international travel bug, so I switched to International Relations. Loved it :)

Went to college intending to be a math or chem major. First semester Calc and second semester chem convinced me otherwise. I took management as a sophomore and was hooked. Ended up major in management finance, got a masters in a branch of management statistics and have been enjoying that field since (18 years).
