Okay, I thought I’d finally post my stats. I know that I’d want them if I were applying next year!
Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2070 R:650 M:710 W:710 (did not send in)
[] ACT: 33 M:35 E:35 R:33 S:30 Essay: 10/12
[] SAT II: none
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.697
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 26 out of 592
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Calc AB: 5 APUSH: 4 (did not send in 3 on Bio)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): none
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc BC (Independent Study), AP Microeconomics, AP Government and Politics: United States, AP Physics B, AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar, 96th Percentile on National German Exam
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Student Council (Senior Class VP, Junior Class Treasurer), Student Union (Secretary), German Club, Delta Epsilon Phi (National German Honor Society), SHUDDLE (a fifth grade mentoring program in my community), Link Crew (a freshman mentoring program), Marching Band (for a year ;)), National Honor Society (Committee Head of Historic House Tours Committee), Three Week Trip to Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, my sophomore year
[] Job/Work Experience: Sandwich Artist at Subway
[] Volunteer/Community service: Most of it just came from my work in Student Council; to be honest, this section of my application wasn’t that great. I did have 60 hours of community service on my transcript, though!
[] Summer Activities: Participated in the World Affairs Seminar at Carrol College in Waukesha, WI in summer of 2011
[] Essays: Probably some of the best stuff I had written up to that point, though my writing has improved so much in these last few months of AP Lit and AP Lang that I would probably still rip them to shreds, now. My CommonApp talked about me getting last place in a mile run in 5th grade. My “Why Vassar?” essay talked about all of the adversity that I have faced in my community during my high school experience. My school has endured many failing levies these past few years, which has resulted in some of my favorite classes (math, German) being cut, and class sizes going through the roof. I discussed how at Vassar, I would be able to overcome these things with its wide breadth of course options as well as its small class sizes.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I honestly didn’t read either of them. I am confident that they were good, though, as they were both written by intelligent teachers. I had one language arts teacher and one math teacher from my junior year.
[] Counselor Rec: HA! As I said, my school has been struggling A LOT. And by this, I mean that I’ve literally had three different counselors in the past four years. I actually never met my counselor until I asked her to write the recommendation, and even that meeting was initiated through an e-mail from ME! I actually just recently read the recommendation after all of these months, and it was essentially a complete copy of my brag sheet, which is the school created brag sheet. She pretty much listed off my extra curriculars and then listed the three words that I would have used to describe myself. It was absolutely ridiculous, but hey, what should I have expected out of someone who knew me for about ten minutes?
[] Additional Rec: none
[] Interview: none

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Ohio
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: 2500 student public school
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: about $120,000?
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Though I am not technically a “first generation college student,” my application could have come across that way. My mother did not go to college, and my father went to Upsala College in The Oranges, NJ. Shortly after he graduated in 1985, Upsala went into financial ruin and has been abandoned ever since. It was actually featured on the show, “Dirty Jobs,” with Mike Rowe cleaning out its remains. Needless to say, the CEEB# that CommonApp asks for was nonexistent for Upsala, so I just had to put four zeros instead.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[list]
[] Strengths: Overall, I think that I had a really well-rounded application. I had a lot of good extra-curriculars, grades that were on par for Vassar, and I truly wanted to go there. My ACT probably was helpful as well, as a 33 is actually above Vassar’s 50th percentile. Also, I think that my strength in math may have stood out among more of the humanities-based applicants. I swear, everybody at Vassar appears to have SOME sort of talent in theatre, of which I am insanely jealous. I think that the math strength and math appreciation, which I talked about in my essays, my have set me apart.
[] Weaknesses: My grades weren’t as good as I’m sure others’ were. I was consistently weak in the science department, always getting Bs instead of As. I also didn’t do the “YourSpace” part of the application. I was kind of worried about this, as everybody who goes to Vassar is so artistic, but I was also already confident in what I had in my application.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Like I said, the math thing was probably very helpful. I also think that my genuine desire to go to Vassar was a huge factor. I think that the admissions officers there can easily tell if one’s heart is in her application or not, and mine definitely was. I am not saying that if one is rejected, she is not right for Vassar, but I do doubt that those who don’t fit will be accepted. The Early Decision I was also definitely in my favor. I was completely honest on my application, and did not try to be something I wasn’t, which I believe to be crucial at a place like Vassar.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Since i did Early Decision, I really didn’t get to apply to other places. I did do Early Action and Northeastern as an absolute last resort if come May I had nowhere else to go. I got accepted there which actually worked to my advantage when appealing my financial aid package at Vassar, because Northeastern did give me more money, a great negotiating point. It also helps to have a dad who works in business ;)
