Is being on a varsity sports team for four years a grocer list EC?

Is volunteering a local hospital a grocery list EC?

Is medaling well in a state math competition a grocery list EC?

Is gettin first in state for Anatomy in Sci Oly a....dare i say it.....a grocery list EC?

Is being the leader of multiple clubs a grocery list...whatever?

I dont understand how colleges, or even this forum, can think that everyone has the opportunity or resources to go to China or w/e and build houses for the poor. Its a great thing to do, but not everyone CAN do it. Not trying to be offensive or anything but what would be some ECs that colleges would consider?

Only list your top few ECs. If you begin to list every club you have ever been in, it is a laundry list. Mention any EC you have had a leadership position in, and any EC that is especially important to you. Especially if you mention it in an essay.

Nothing in isolation is a laundry list EC. What people on this forum mean by a laundry list is a long list of seemingly unrelated ECs where the student has made minimal impact.

Good advice.

And none of the things you mentioned are laundry list ECs, except being president of multiple clubs. If you’re president of Math Club and Sci Oly, however, that’s great. Assuming the ECs you mentioned in your OP are your own, you seem to have a solid, developed interest in medicine and science.

And colleges don’t just want to see that your parents can pay for you to build houses and China. They want to see passion, initiative, and accomplishment, and they want to see the composite person behind the club presidencies and awards. Luckily, I definitely see that emerging from your list.

Colleges prefer dedication to 1-2 clubs, organizations than president of 8 clubs…
Do EC’s that interest you and relate to ur major… thas all u need

How much will it hurt me not to have any ECs within my intended major? I want to go into physics, but there is nothing even closely related to that at my school.

I’m trying to do that, with any luck I’ll be able to take physics I and II at the community college this year. My dillema is that there is no math club, WSYE or Sci Oly.

If you were just a member, don’t put it down (because yes, colleges know you joined french club for the food). If it seems really out of place, don’t put it down (unless you can develop it in one of your essays). Etc. You’re assembling a list of accomplishments that illustrate your personality–you get no bonus points for extra club memberships or 5 hours of community service here and there.

doberhound1, consider starting your own thread.

well… don’t most college applications allow you only 4~6 slots anyways?

Also, I think that even if you don’t have leadership, if you have significant awards to back it up, I think you should put it down… for example our school’s Sci Oly is huge so even though I ran for office, I didn’t get it…but that doesn’t mean I didn’t put effort into it.

Sorry, I didn’t mean don’t put down things that are significant. I was thinking of inconsequential clubs like Key Club or French club, where being a member means fairly little. But for competition-oriented clubs like Sci Oly, absolutely include it if you’ve won awards!

The point I was making was to avoid putting down clubs you joined just to join. If no one will remember you were in a given club next year, it’s probably not important enough to put down. But if you are heavily involved in a group, leadership be damned, by all means emphasize that! Especially since it fits in so nicely with the general theme of your ECs.

OK, SO… THE FACT IS, Unless u got some MAJOR AWARDS, RECOGNITIONS, Etc. Or SPECIAL TALENTs ------ other EC’s dont make THAT BIG of a difference on ur application. Even president of a club is kind of BS and colleges dont rly care unless u did something worthwhile with it… It all boils down to grades and scores, average EC’s (including presidents) jus fill up space… wont hurt you, but may not help you as much as you think unless u got some real prestige…

This is random but for my school’s science olympiads we suck. I got 2 of the only 2 top 10 finishes on our team (lets just say my partner and I for both of those events were AWESOME we both are probs gonna be copresidents next year :D), but I didn’t win any awards. However I put a TON of time into it. Is it worth mentioning?
