"Your ECs are too scattered"

I see that comment so often on CC. I thought colleges wanted to see well rounded people? I guess doing different extracurriculars doesn't help with that...?

I’ve posted on a lot of similar threads. My EC’s are super scattered, and I’m starting to think it’s not a bad thing. I agree with you on the well-rounded thing also. I say do what you love and your passions will be obvious! :)

Most colleges don’t factor ECs into admission. The ones that do are places like Harvard that can pick and choose from among their overabundance of applicants with high academic stats.

There are very few people who really have deep interests in a variety of subjects. The Colleges that care about ECs do like well rounded students with impressive achievements in a variety of subjects. However, the comments you’ve seen here are directed at students who tried to do things that colleges wanted, so participated in a variety of ECs that the student didn’t really care about or accomplish anything notable with. Having a laundry list of memberships and offices in which one held a title, but didn’t do anything, will not impress top colleges.

The places like Harvard like both students who have deep interests, and impressive accomplishments in a variety of activities, and the students who have deep interests, impressive accomplishments in one or two activities.

Definitely agree Northstarmom. Thanks for helping me out earlier on this by the way  Pick what you love.
