<p>I do miss the Residence halls where I could download any 100+mbs file under 2 minutes. Hooray for Berkeley internet experience.</p>

<p>However, on the outside, the popular choice for speed tends to be Comcast, which gives you fast speed most of the time and then congests like a highway during peak hours (eg. football nights).</p>
<p>Good news is, if you’re lucky, you can get a reliable 30mbit connection from Sonic.net for $80/mo, which will be approximately 1/3 the speed you get in the dorms, without a cap. If you used Wireless-G (aka, your laptop and router aren’t <em>BOTH</em> wireless-N), then that’ll be 3/5 the speed since Wireless-G is physically limited to 54mbit.</p>
<p>yeah i’ve noticed that too. comcast will randomly shut down from time to time. once i had to go onto campus at 3:00am to get documents from bspace. -_-</p>
<p>Yeah, in my fraternity we had 50Mb Comcast, so I could pull in downloads at upwards of 3MB/s.</p>

<p>In almost all cases the wi-fi will be constant enough to receive a signal in your dorm room. Even in Foothill.</p>

<p>The WiFi quality in the dorms depends on your exact location. Eg. RESCOMP is basically non-existent and out-of-range in Foothill La Loma (Bldgs 1-3).</p>
<p>However, RESCOMP wifi is pretty bad. If you’re living in the dorms, get your own wireless router. If you’re just visiting friends, stay in the reception areas or ask for their wireless key. If you’re just on campus, there’s AirBears. If you use RESCOMP for anything more than a backup, you will have problems.</p>

False. I’m living next door to the lounge in Unit 2 and I don’t receive a signal. This is true for a lot of people in Unit 2 who I’ve talked to. I can’t mention any other place since I haven’t lived/discussed those areas with others, but I know that it’s usually the opposite case.</p>

<p>In the res halls, you can usually get real speeds of up to about 10 Mbps if u plug your ethernet directly into the wall. slower (i think 2 Mbps) if you live in a triple and have to go through a router to share a wall jack with one of your other roommates.</p>
<p>As far as I know, Airbears is still using the ‘b’ standard and RESCOMP shouldn’t be any different. like excelblue said, RESCOMP is very slow, so if u plan to do any youtubing/downloading/DC++ing, ethernet is really the way to go.</p>
