Cornell....

Tony,

I'd actually argue that your new ranking system is flawed. When someone gives say cornell #1 and nothing else, you are giving Cornell 1pt and 7 schools 8 points, basically that person allocated a total of 57pts (7X8 + 1). BUT if someone gave each school a rank you are giving them a total of 36 points (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8=36). So the person who only says one school has a much bigger skew and value.

The right way (although time consuming) would be to give each person 36 points and subtract the rating of the schools ranked (say someone says cornell 1, Princeton 2, Dartmouth 3 and nothing else). You would take 36, subtract 6 (1+2+3), and divide 30 into the 5 remaining schools (giving each a rank of 6).

No if you want to do all this work is another question lol.

slipper,

I appreciate the suggestion, but honestly there is absolutely no way that I am going to redo all of the data and do this to make it completely accurate. I understand your argument, but the majority of the votes were actually ranked anyway and the ones who gave only three or four schools would be a pain in the arse distribute exactly 36 points for. I think it makes a little bit of sense, though, that someone who is so strongly in favor of one Ivy gives only that school one point and the rest eight points. It is a thread for "your favorite Ivy," so I guess someone who marks one school only should probably have a little bit more influence than someone who ranks all of them. I'm probably wrong but either way that would take way too much time. Thanks again, and sorry :

CORNELL HAS CLOSED THE GAP ON DARTMOUTH, both are tied for last
YALE IS STILL OWNING...2nd place Brown is still 58 pts. behind
BROWN, HARVARD, PRINCETON ARE ALL VERY CLOSE AT 2nd, 3rd, and 4th

Things are getting interesting...one more ranking of Cornell over Dartmouth and we have a new Ivy at the bottom...but no one can touch Yale at this point.

Penn
Harvard
Yale
Columbia
Brown
Princeton
Dartmouth
Cornell

So what that list is actually telling everyone is the school that is least disliked.

Princeton is my favorite. Nice architecture!

Cornell
Yale
Columbia
Dartmouth
Harvard
Princeton
Brown
UPenn

handyandy58---sort of...it's more like which ivy is most liked, which is pretty much the same as which school is least disliked...1 pt is awarded for a no.1 ranking, 2 for no.2 ranking, etc. but an 8 is awarded to any school that isn't ranked or is ranked 8th...so basically the school with the least amount of points is the most liked...and the overall "favorite" ivy

36 points for Yale!

haha actually handyandy...you want your school to get the LEAST number of points because a number one ranking means the school gets one point...two points for a number two ranking, etc....unless, of course, you really hate yale that much!

I understand the points system. But I'm trying to exploit its borked-ness.

Hey, I like Yale, hate Yale, and am totally indifferent about Yale.

eh whatever floats your boat
most people understand that you can't rank a school more than once...

Yale
Dartmouth
Penn
Princeton
Columbia
Harvard
Brown
Cornell

I'm really not a Harvard fan...

Cornell ---- the best by far imo
Columbia --- awesome new york experience plus great academics
Princeton --- let's face it...it's number 1 fro a reason
UPenn --- great school, just worried about crime etc in area
Brown --- so liberal, but really great school
Harvard --- snobs about
Yale --- reminds me of a really nice boarding school, not for me
Dartmouth --- didn't even look...too far into the woods!
