Your Good Buy Of The Day (Part 1)

I used to use whatever haircolor I had a coupon for. But now I use only Nice 'n Easy. It covers the best. Worth a couple of extra dollars. I have very gray hair and just yesterday someone was surprised to find out I colored it.

Wow, you ā€œself-colorersā€ must have nerves of steel. Getting mine colored at the salon is one of my few indulgences as I’m fearful of the results I might get on my own. Any trade secrets as to how to get best results on your head and minimal results on the bathroom walls?

I got mine done at a salon a few times, then moved to new locale and took advantage of family discounts & access to pro supplies. Get the gloves, the mixing bowl with a handle, the brush, etc. Apply it when nearly naked  and wipe the splashes off the counter right away. Also, if you are nervous, leave it on the shorter amount of time the first time so you can see how it will dry, increase your time in subsequent applications until you reach the perfect shade.

I like the Feria products. I get a lot of compliments on my color and application. Even my hairdresser comments everytime I see her.

wow I could save lots of $ doing color at home. But I’m chicken. Last time I tried (years ago), my hair came out too dark. I looked like Morticia. Washed it with Dawn (about 50 times) and then went to my hairdresser for highlights. My plan is to stop dying it when I stop working full time. We’ll see…

Ditto. Of course, my mother still colors hers so that would be interesting…

The key to the ā€œright colorā€ is the timing. Don’t leave it on too long…it will get too dark. BUT don’t leave it on too short…or it will not cover the grey and you’ll be irritated you spent time doing it at all.

My biggest tip (gotten from my hairdresser friend)…when the time comes to rinse it out…water up your whole head (I do mine in the shower)…and count to 20…then rinse it all out. This ā€œblends inā€ especially if you are doing just the roots in subsequent colorings.

Yes toneranger! Perfect description of my hair the one and only time I colored it!!!

I also had bright red highlights in it. Hideous. And I was going to a New Year’s Eve party. Washed it every half hour all day long, which did absolutely nothing for it. It was still black with red highlights. I was mortified but went to the party anyway and tried to avoid having my picture taken by anyone.

I spoke to my hairdresser today about how to gracefully stop dyeing my hair and go gray. She had great suggestions for how to ā€˜test the waters’ and see how much gray a person really has (temporary dyes, etc.). I’m not ready for this yet, but good to know for future reference.

I like Loreal Superior Preference.

NM is clearing out some very nice stuff, and I got a beautiful dress for the next holiday season for a fraction of its retail price! I hope it fits, or I’ll have to up my exercise routine :)

CC runners - Brooks Running has some shoes on sale, so check their site. I got a pair of my favorite Glycerins with free shipping.

No good buy YET, but am looking forward to a day of shopping tomorrow with D who is a college junior and headed to a national mtg in Austin in a couple of weeks and I to one in San Antonio in April so we both need to find some business /business casual wear. Not a ton of choices in town, but hope to find something - and something NOT winter!!!

Haven’t been shopping really much since Christmas so looking forward to a girl’s day and hopefully some decent finds!

My new Brooks Glycerin shoes were delivered yesterday! They are so-o-o cool! I just could not understand why the package sent from Sumner, WA had to travel through Portland, OR to get to my neck of the woods here north of Seattle

Great trip to Goodwill this week. I found a cute Sherpani purse that appeared absolutely new (no tags). I bought it for $2.99. Looked it up on the computer when I came home. Zappos is selling same purse for $64.
Also got a nice DKNY tank for $1.99!

Found some Chaco shoes on the REI clearance for 30% off. That’s not a super fab deal but pretty good since I’ve rarely seen Chacos reduced that much. Also saved shipping cost by having them delivered to the local REI store. They are to be delivered this week.Hope they fit.

Besides free delivery to the store, you can stand right there and try them on. If they don’t fit, you can hand them right back over the counter and REI returns them for you at no cost.

Went to Ross today & bought 3 Bali bras @ 1/3 of MFR @ $7.99-9.99 apiece & a cute t-shirt @ $6.99! We don’t have an REI in HI, but we do try to shop there when we visit LA.

I’m more fearful of results I get in a salon. I’ve colored mine for years by myself. Got talked into trying a salon for a special occasion. It cost 10 times what it would at home and the results were not as good. Just yesterday someone asked me where I got my hair colored.

My suggestion: experiement with the different brands until you find the one that works best for you. Try a shade just a little lighter than you think you are. My hair is really dark brown but I use medium.

For the at home hair colorers. Many of them say to not use on highlighted hair. I have tried using the semi permanent color from the drugstore but my highlighted areas seem to come out slightly orange. How do you prevent that?
Both my D’s are obsessed with coloring their hair dark brown almost black. They both use drug store brands.

Okay shoppers- D needs black pumps that can be worn with black pants (my good buy of $22 at Ross, found a petite pair and they fit her perfect) and also with a black wool skirt. Looking for something with a heel but not super high.

For black pumps, try TJ Maxx, D has found several pairs there recently. Also 6pm.com runs frequent sales and has easy returns.

D and I just shopped for pumps yesterday at DSW. One of her feet is a full size smaller than the other so she has to get Mary Jane pumps so the smaller one will stay on. That being said, surprisingly, she found the Madden Girl pumps to be comfortable and not crazy high. If you can catch Johnston & Murphy pumps on sale, they are great and very comfortable. They have pumps left on the sale section of the website and there is a code to get another 30% off the sale price, making them very reasonable. I ordered the patent Mary Jane pump from them and I love them.

Will check out 6pm. We don’t have a TJ Maxx or a Marshalls. Went to Ross yesterday and they didn’t have anything decent. She wears a 6 1/2 which is hard to find at our Ross. Our Ross is pretty weak.
