I teach in a business discipline and get several related email blasts each week assessing current economic conditions. Stores are desperate for cash and they will continue bigger than usual discounts in the foreseeable future. Also, stores are cancelling orders for inventory for the coming seasons with the expectation that demand will drop for non-essential goods and that they donāt have cash to pay their vendors.
As well, retailers donāt have cash to pay their rent. Hopefully, landlords will renegotiate given mall closures, etc. The most notable declaration of that problem last week was Cheesecake Factory, but many others as well. Some brands have worked hard to pay their employees through last week or through this coming weekend, but more layoffs are coming.
Someone on one of the cc threads (this one?) mentioned how we all might want to shut down our spending during the downturn, an opportunity to abstain similar to February Freeze from years past. I respectfully disagree. Iām not encouraging wild spending sprees, but if we have brands that we love and want to see them sustain, we need to be giving them some business within the confines our individual budgetary ability. At discounted prices, they wonāt be making any substantial profits, but they may be able to break even and stay in business.
