I finished Secondary School in 2007. I'll apply to colleges in the Fall 2008. In my Final Grades, I got a 'D' in Math, just choked on the final exam. All the other grades are As and Bs, mostly As.

SAT I Math, 760. My Math teacher will write a teacher letter of recommendation, this one should be good.

I'll do the Math I and Math II SAT Subject tests in the Fall.

I'll apply to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford (EA) and MIT.

ECA, letters of recommendations, etc., etc should all be pretty good.

Is that 'D' in Math an 'application killer ??'

Can you take a math class at a community college? If you get an A that ought to cut down the impact of that D. You’re going to have to explain that grade to the Ivies, though.

My D got into Harvard with a C in Calculus I; she followed it up with an A in Calculus II. Can you retake the D course or follow it with a higher level Math?

I live in Singapore. The pre-university system here is the U.K. A Levels which is equal to the US 12th grade and the first year in a University. Your grades are determined by just one final exam. There are no retakes unless you retake the full course load which for me was 7 subjects.

The A Levels exams are very tough. The A grades, the US universities equate with a 5 on an AP exam, a B in the A levels equate to a 4 on an AP exam, etc.

Anyway, I’m stuck with the D unless I retake all 7 subjects, the full load.

Another question ??

I’m an American, born & educated in Singapore. Here after one completes pre-university education, (Nov. 2007), graduates are asked to do National Service (NS), this is military service, for 22 mos. For non-Singaporeans, it’s optional. I opted for it. In June, 2008 I finished my Basic Miitary Training and received an award as #1/200 recruit soldiers, determined 50% by peer appraisal. I’m now in Officer School, ‘OCS.’ This is 9 mos.+ of Leadership training. Currently, I’m at the top of my Officer Cohort, 384 Officer Cadets. I’m commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Singapore Armed Forces in March 2009 (at age 19 years), finish NS in Feb 2010. I’ll matriculate to a US university in the Fall 2010. I’ll file the admissions applications in the Fall 2008.

How will the NS/OCS achievement be received by the university admissions committees ?? In the list of ECA that is part of the application, does the NS/OCS come first or the other ECA that I’ve done.

Any comments ??

I can’t retake the Math that I choked on previously. I’m struggling now to prep and make the exam dates in Oct, Nov and Dec. just to do the Math I and Math II Subject tests. I have Infantry training on the horizon in Thailand, and Taiwan, and Jungle Warfare Training in Brunei. Thanks.
