your major makes it easier to get in?

So while i was at the info session, the girl talking said that they look at their applicants in terms of all the others with the same major. For example she said they look at a engineer major with other engineer majors. I want to major in psychology, and since that's not a popular major at rice (or not as popular as engineering) would it make it easier for me to get in?

Also how is the psych programs at Rice?

Thanks!

well there are probably fewer spots for psych majors than there are for engr majors so its very difficult to tell which major will give you an admissions advantage.

Rice also knows that most kids change their majors - Only music and architecture majors are actually admitted to a department, everyone else is admitted to the university in general. I doubt if it makes much difference which major you declare. JMHO

It doesnt matter at all actually. You are admitted to Rice University, not Rice University Department of Psychology or Engineering. (Except the music and architecture school)

As a result, even if you are the only student majoring in field X, you have to be admitted competing against all other applicants and be good enough to get in

Majoring in Psychology is not going to make it easier for you to get into the school. The admissions office isn’t even going to give big emphasis to it. Why? Most kids who enter Rice change their majors. A lot of kids thinking about going pre-med before freshmen year, for example, decide to drop it and follow another program.
