Your motivation

What are the reasons you guys want to go to Bucknell? One of them, for me, is that they offer Army ROTC and secondly, they have an amazing Young Republicans club (pretty famous group).

It's campus is beautiful, it seems like its the perfect size, i felt really comfortable on campus, it has a great business program for what I want and the social scence seems pretty cool.

Drawbacks: location!!! middle of nowhere. Thats honestly the only thing that is keeping me from going there without a doubt.

There is also a very active Democratic club for those of you to the left. :) They increased democratic voter turnout by 350% in the county during the last election.

Acutually there is quite a bit to do in and around campus on the weekends, and many road trip to Philly or NYC. D.C. is within road trip distance as well. My son enjoys the live music scene, and has heard many good bands at Bucknell.

But if you don't mind being in the middle of nowhere (I live in suburbia but I love the outdoors and stuff - I'm a Boy Scout :D) you do get tons of outdoor opportunities, like canoeing, kayaking, hiking, biking, etc.

And the town is supposed to be really nice.

For me?
Pros: Excellent English program, beautiful campus, and I can get in. I also love the tight-knit community thing, and I know I will graduate with a great education.
Cons: I have never seen so many preppily dressed rich kids in my life so that's a little intimidating (my tour guides were really sweet if that means anything) also Lewisberg sucks. Let's face it, it just does. Another con is that people seem really into the frat/sorority thing, which also sucks.

You must not have run into my son, stain! While there are many "preppies," they are also accepting of those who aren't. Freshmen don't rush, so you have an entire year to think through the process and decide if you want to or not.

As for Lewisburg, I'm not sure exactly what you are looking for in a college town. There are things to do there if you seek them out. I went to UVa and believe it or not Charlottesville is not a happening place, either. Well, unless you like to fox hunt. That's because the arts and entertainment is mainly found on the campus itself. But you're right, Lewisburg is not the big city.

What kinds of things are you looking to do in your spare time? Museums? Bars? Professional Athletic events? You may also want to consider the cost of big city activities. They are usually more expensive than campus run events which charge nominal fees if anything. How often would you be utilizing the city? Would the occasional road trip be adequate? Or would you need more access? A large majority of colleges are not located in big cities, but rather out in the suburbs, or as in this case even further away.

These are very good questions to explore as you make your final decision. Good luck!

I completely agree with everything Jewls said, right now bucknell is my #1 or 2 and the only other drawback for me that is holding me back from making it my top choice is that it doesnt have the repuation and resources that a bigger school with more money would have. Also, bucknell is a wonderful school, but it doesnt usually get the credit it deserves in rankings. Therefore it is somewhat unheard of and very underrated.

What other schoolars are you highly considering other than Bucknell? For me its Boston College and Northeastern University.

Haha thanks texastaximom I realize now that my remark was slightly prejudiced about the prep thing...after all not too many people can afford forty-grand-a-year private schools. My school has quite a big alternative/ghetto wannabee scene so it was just a shock to come to a place where everyone seems so homogenous. But I do like Bucknell a lot, I know I would have a very happy four years there!!!

You will probably be very happy wherever you choose to be! In the next few weeks the tables will turn, and everyone who has been waiting on envelopes will now get the chance to make the colleges sweat it out for a change. :) And then it's off on your new adventure. Some of us old timers are very envious!

My son had a lot of the same concerns you have...he decided against Washington and Lee (too preppy he said) and Colgate (too boonies) but he really liked the atmosphere and the students he met at Bucknell.

Our public school has preppy wannabes, no bonafide preps, and yes gangsta wannabes. Cowboys are more the norm.

My son wrote his personal statement on why he is a punk rock enthusiast, he is leaning towards a poli sci/philo major but he's definitely off to the left, and he hasn't cut his hair since August. Musically he is definitely alternative. Clothing is not "off the rack" but rather "off the floor." My guess is that most schools have a least some kids like this, even if it doesn't look that way on the brochure. I often wonder if there are some Carleton students who don't play frisbee for instance.

I am very interested to see where the kids of the Class of 2009 on these boards matriculate!

Okay, for those of you who like basketball, Bucknell just beat Holy Cross in the Patriot League Tournament, so they are going to the NCAA Tournament. (where they will no doubt be paired with Duke or something of that nature and get stomped but it's nice to go)

Yes, why ARE they all playing frisbee on the brochures? I guess they try and show "wholesome activites." So what about baking cookies or knitting or something? ;) Good to know that there are kids like your son over there.

texastaximom's really nice!! u r always there and answer all the questions about Bucknell, many thanks, really !!

Jewls, im also looking at Cornell, Amherst, Dartmouth, and Carnegie Mellon. Good luck with your schools!

Don't forget to watch Bucknell tonight or follow along on the ESPN website. They play Kansas. 14th seeds don't traditionally fare well, however Bucknell is tied with Utah State for the highest graduation rate of basketball players in the NCAA--100%. :) So there is something to celebrate regardless of the score. Go Bison!

oops that should be watch tomorrow night...I keep thinking today is Friday!

texastaximom, your S and friends should be pretty excited...congrats to Bucknell and the Patriot League. Awesome win against Kansas!

OMG YEEEESSSS! They switched over for the last minute of the game...it took forever. I'm sure the neighbors think we are nutso...as we are probably the only people in south Texas with that game on! :)

I can't believe KU lost! lol
GJ Bucknell

TxTaxiMom - just south Texas? You were probably the only people in Texas with it on.

Anywho - hooray for Bucknell!
