I think it will be tight- what do you think about my chances (Fall 2007)?
SAT- 2040
ACT- 31
GPA (9-11)- 3.6 unweighted 4.1 weighted (will have total of 7 AP/13 Honors classes) Highly regarded HS does not rank.
EC- Soccer, Council, ASB, Started school community service club

I'm going to take SAT and ACT again. I think my GPA may be the problem. I'm a legacy (brother and mother)- does anyone know if that helps?

Your GPA looks like mine, although I did have higher test scores (2070/33). Compared to other students, your ECs and GPA might be a bit on the weak side. Your advanced classes and the highly regarded HS you attend might help. Your legacies will definitely help. USC is probably a slight reach for you.

Same question I ask everyone: what major? Yes, it actually really matters, as some majors are much more selective than others, and directed ECs help a lot.

I'm going to apply to the business school. I know they do not accept freshman into the business school but they do have a Business Scholars program for freshman. I would love to get in to that but if not, I'll be happy to be accepted as undeclared or pre-business and I'll apply for the business school sophomore year.

1)freshman are accepted into the business school
2)your stats look very similar to mine and i was accepted to Viterbi
3)yes, legacy helps (I didn't have any)

My d has similar stats and will be applying this fall. As follow on questions to CC411...Do I understand correctly that you can prioritize your preferences for majors, ie first choice Marshall, second choice undeclared such that if you are not accepted to Marshall you will be considered as undeclared? Also, am I correct that the bar for acceptance undeclared is slightly lower than Marshall?

My brother went to USC in 2002. When he applied to the business school, they did not take freshman unless they were accepted as a "Business Scholar". He initially didn't get accepted to that so he was accepted as a "Pre-Business" major. They told him that was basically undeclared and was part of the school of Letters, Arts, and Sciences, but he could use Business Advisement for to help with class selections. He would have to take certain prereqs and apply to Marshall in his sophomore year. (This is still true now for those who go in undeclared and want to transfer.) My mom called the business school and got him accepted as a Business Scholar because she sent in his 7th semester grades and he had good grades.

jbusc and 2+2=5 pointed out that you now can be accepted to Marshall as a freshman. I just called them and yes, that is true- THANKS! They told me beyond SAT's and GPA, they are looking for LEADERSHIP and MATH strengths. They also said that if you are not accepted to Marshall Business, your application will be sent to the dept of your second choice. If they do not accept you, your application will USUALLY (strange word they used) be sent to the college of Letters, Arts, and Sciences for possible acceptance as undeclared. Marshall said they do not consider applicants who put Business as their second choice.

OC mom, about where is the bar of acceptance for Marshall vs. undeclared- The counselor that I talked to wouldn't say that specifically it was easier, just that business looks at specific strengths.

It really sucks because my stats are better than my brother's were 5 years ago and I might not get in.
