I'm currently a 16 year old Junior. I'm very interested in Theatre. I'm looking into different Colleges that offer Degrees in Theatre or Musical Theatre.

I'm looking for a college that offers Musical Theatre Degrees. My dream is to one day be on Broadway. However small that chance may be, that's what I'm aiming for. My question is, what are your top 20 or 10, Theatre Colleges. Any additional information you can offer on them would be appreciated. Things such as do they usually attend Unifieds, what degrees do they offer, BA or BFA? Do they offer individual auditions, and if so is there a fee and do you know how much it is? And most importantly, if you have any opinions on the quality of the program and its environment that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to view this post and respond.

I’m entering my junior year this fall, too, and I’m in a similar situation, researching theatre programs and what not. Here is my list so far (it hasn’t really been narrowed down yet):

Vassar
Northwestern
Pace
Juilliard
Barnard
Fordham
Boston U
Marymount Manhattan
DePaul
University of the Arts
USC

I’m not sure about all of the programs, but I do know that Vassar and Northwestern offer BA’s, while Pace, Marymount Manhattan, and USC offer both BA’s and BFA’s.

I realize that there are a couple of big names missing from my list, like SUNY Purchase, NYU, and Carnegie Mellon. The only reason is that those schools don’t offer financial aid to international students, which is a big factor for me since I’m Canadian.

ActorinShades – you’ve really covered a lot of ground with your questions! Most of them have already been discussed at length on this discussion group. I suggest that you take some time to browse through the various topics. It will take a while – there’s a wealth of information here – but it’s really worth it. After you’ve done that, try posting a few questions that are more specific, and I’m sure you’ll get a lot of responses. The group here is very friendly and willing to help!

Any list of 10 or 20 top schools is going to vary widely depending on who you’re talking to. For what it’s worth, here are a few that I am personally familiar with and like: CMU, CCM, Syracuse, NYU, Ithaca, Hartt, Penn State, Elon, University of Michigan, SUNY Purchase (BFA Theater, not MT), Northwestern (BA degree), Muhlenberg (BA degree in Theater, not MT). There are many other terrific schools out there – it just depends on what you’re looking for.

And definitely check out the Musical Theater forum if that’s what you’re primarily interested in.
